Was watching the little storm pass JHB and saw a bolt of lightning hit the Rosebank tower.

Since then all has been dead

Can connnect to tower but cant download anything

Posting from a dialup

RoDent:

Perhaps it was caused by the storm just passing over that area? Seeing that it's a MicroWave link and the "epicenter" of the storm was in Randburg, maybe their link got broken (or it rainfaded ;-)

Aaah yes. I'm a block away, but didn't see/hear anything. Too noisy here [:)] Seems to be backup up now, routing-wise, but my modem still can't connect.

So much for Sentech's quote on their website:
quote:

Unlike conventional terrestrial networks, Sentech's high-powered radio based Internet connectivity does not rely on the terrestrial telephone network that is prone to failure due a variety of reasons including cable theft and cable failure as a result of adverse weather conditions and human errors.

I'm accessing my home machine via ADSL, which has been up all this time

Mine too, can't access anything other than the sentech website.
connecting via tower 22 PTA.
However its back up now, But for how long I wonder

What is interesting is that the number of users on the Mintek tower has a rather marked inpact on latencies. At the time you made the post my latency dropped from mid-high 400's (sentech.co.za) to 150ms times ....

Maybe a few well placed lightning strikes will fix a whole bunch of things (one can dream ;-) )

Had a lil problem on and off on the Brixton tower, storm was prob the problem

Fantasy is what people want, reality is what they need.

Up again and Flying

Must have kicked all p2p users off and freed lots of bandwith

The Gods have spoken with their Fire Tongues - Seems like they have open tickets too!!!

The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do.

Seems to have gone down for about half and hour. I think it was more an issue with the weather. I dont think I have ever seen a dust cloud that thick when I was driving around.
I could connect to Sentech but there was no data going through.
Strangely enough my pings were lower than I have ever seen.

Freaky ****.

Oh well, its working again.

Have to agree about lots of bandwidth suddenly, Immediately after the nework came back I was getting speeds I haven't seen in months on a download from Canada

oooooh I cant wait to get home to see this...

You guys are soooo crule - I'm stuck at work for the next 2 hours still. Bet we'll be back to "normal" by the time I get on-line [V]

The extra bandwidth is almost definitely a result of many unmanned modems getting disconnected - all the ppl that left downloads running while they were at work [;)]

Although I would LOVE to be proved wrong and its actually a real fix to the bandwidth problems...

During the brief downtime on Brixton 126, naturally I foned up - and stupid little Orc at support centre told me 'Im the only one who has any connectivity problems in Joburg', was put through at my teeth gritted request, to one of the Ring Wraiths and grumbled about the stupid Orc - Ring Wraith said he'd 'slap the Orc for me' unquote.. I think the 'Orc' tag has caught on amidst the Sentech personnel..
