Behind the Bluster, Russia Is Collapsing

The bear is back. That's what all too many Russia-watchers have been saying since Russian troops steamrolled Georgia in August, warning that the country's strongman, Vladimir Putin, was clawing his way back toward superpower status. The new Russia's resurgence has been fueled -- quite literally -- by windfall profits from gas and oil, a big jump in defense spending and the cocky attitude on such display during the mauling of Georgia, its U.S.-backed neighbor to the south. Many now believe that the powerful Russian bear of the Cold War years is coming out of hibernation.

Not so fast. Predictions that Russia will again become powerful, rich and influential ignore some simply devastating problems at home that block any march to power...

If the credit crunch had one positive it was to an extent pulling the carpet out from Putin and his lofty ambitions

During Obamamania, with America distracted, I quietly deployed an apple pie....

The question is...what?

During Obamamania, with America distracted, Russia quietly deployed the Iksander Missiles.

Are you referring to this ( off Wikipedia ):

In November 2008 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has stated that Russia would deploy the Iskander missile system to the Kaliningrad region - between Nato members Lithuania and Poland - to "neutralise - if necessary - the [US] anti-missile system"

Or some to Syria?

< They seem to be Iskander, not Iksander BTW >

What else can Russia do? If the defense system is not meant for Russia, then the US won't mind Russia bypassing it as a precaution. The US would never stand for someone doing the same to them, as they are doing to Russia. and I haven't heard the US complaining about it yet either, so maybe they understand. This is a chess game, you cannot checkmate somebody and expect them not to make a move. Not Russia, and not the US..

and FYI Russia also offered to host the system which would make more sense geographically and do alot diplomatically. The US politely declined, I guess they WERE hoping they could checkmate Russia instead of working with them. What a stupid decision. Wonder what bright spark made it?

With a small missile base in Poland? Please have a look at a globe and understand the reality of the situation: the proposed American missile shield posed no threat to Russia's nuclear capacity.

Huh? A shield designed to knock out nukes has no effect on the nuclear capabilities of the country right next to it? Wow, I guess it useless then. Why put it up?

Well Russia certainly has seen through the charade and aren't hesitating to make their move. IMO this isn't just taking advantage of the U.S transition. They know what they're dealing with in Obama. Brakes are coming off

I am sure we have been through this quite thoroughly but one more time for the slow: have you looked at a globe? Do you notice where Poland is relative to Russia and the US? And to the middle east? Have you noticed the size of Russia? Try picking a few sites around Russia where they might launch from and tracing it with your finger to the US.

Now if you actually do that and still come back here and say that a single missile base in Poland will thwart Russia's nuclear arsenal then there is no hope for you.

Oh I see what you mean. Of course it will not thwart them entirely. It will just thwart Russia from knocking out US nuke sites in Germany etc.
Which is probably where they would be launching from in the unlikely event that they want to nuke Russia.
