Song composition / structure - a “technical” question

There is a specific name given to a part of a song that makes a departure from the established structure - usually for 10 to 20 seconds or so, before the song’s structure continues.
And I’m damned if I can remember what it is called.

Middle eight.

The middle eight (the B section) in classic AABA Tin Pan Alley 32-bar form is also referred to as the bridge. But this is merely a source of confusion, not the proof that the two are one and the same.
