Has anyone fitted a sonoff + temperature probe to their geyser?

I've ordered a new sonoff th origin + temperature probe

I was wondering if anyone has fitted one of these TH sonoffs to their geyser and if so, do you discard your existing thermostat and use the sonoff to switch off at certain temperatures or do you use the sonoff just as an indicator ontop of the existing thermostat?

If you're just using the sonoff as an indicator where do you put the temperature probe?

I would not advise getting rid of the thermostat because if anything fails in an on state you are going to boil that geyser until it pops.

I also would not advise using the TH as the relay to the geyser and only for the temperature monitoring.

Let something else turn it on and off, the TH16 will melt/explode within a year, not sure if this new 20A claim will do better.

I did however do exactly this for a long while because my Geyserwise died on Christmas Day. I configured Tasmota with fail safe rules to turn off the geyser if an extreme temperature was reached or communication was lost with the probe.

It worked quite well until I found the cover of the TH16 laying on the bonnet of my car one morning and all the input terminals burnt to hell.

Now I use a CBI Astute and I have the TH16 purely as a temperature probe, but I can’t put it and the thermostat in there at the same time so it’s actually just making contact with it and giving a less than accurate reading.

I use one of these in my biltong machine, 20A is a bit lite for a geyser in my opinion.

A pitty Geyserwise does not have a mobile app.

I have a regular POW 16A running the power for my geyser at the moment (going on 4 years now), it uses a heat pump so 16A is fine, power peaks at around 2300w. The origin I have ordered is 20a so it'll be fine.

More interested in the placement of the probe if running both, where do you put the second one?

You can't do it that way. Either read the existing thermostat value with something like an ESP8266 or get a Geyserwise thermostat and again use a ESP8266. Also use a contactor to switch on the geyser.

will follow this and see how it goes..

ordered from sonoff direct since this new TH unit is not stocked locally, so it's going to probably get here in 2 months time.

Yeah the thermostat is very conductive and just putting my probe in contact with it gives a pretty damn close reading.

I’ve been thinking of getting up there again and insulation taping it around the base of the thermostat and see if it’s any better.

Additional to what mzezman suggested, also try set your 2.4ghz network to 20mhz bandwidth
I needed to do that to get some devices working
Unfortunately I don't have access to my vox fibre router to do any changes unless I can do it from the ewelink app.

Before I got the fibre - it worked on my telkom adsl router.

you can sign that indemnity form to get access to your vox router can't you?

I'm curious about the sonoff th temperature probe placement. I have mine placed just above the thermostat against the flange, but because the geyser is on the roof, the ambient temp at night give incorrect readings (too low). Where can I place this probe where it is more accurate? Is there a way to put it inside the standard thermostat probe hole, while still keeping the original thermostat? Or something with 2x temperature sensors, compatible with sonoff?
