I'm sure I've asked before and gotten an answer, but for the life of me can't find the post now.

Just finished with my new gate motor, but didn't do any HA setup. I want to add statuses to my HA, not sure yet if I want to be able to open with HA yet though.

I have two options for getting my gate status:
  1. Reed switch - I've made provision for wiring, but I'm not sure how to wire the reed switch to the sv. I'll power the sv from the 12v in the motor, but as for wiring the reed switch onto it - not sure how I'd do this. I like the idea of reed switch because it gives the true state of the gate.

The only downside with the reed switch is that I actually want to connect the reed to my house alarm, so that if it's armed and the gate opens my alarm goes off. I'm not sure if I'd be able to use the same reed switch for both the alarm and the sonoff sv.

  2. Using the gate status output on my D5 Smart. This is the easiest in terms of wiring, though may not give the real status of the gate if it's been tampered with. Also not sure how I would wire this to a sv.

Any links or diagrams would be much appreciated.

I would personally not go with the Reed Switch (extra wiring and components outside of the motor casing). The 'best' or easiest is to use the status output on your D5 Smart.

I personally used a little voltage regulator (which is probably totally overkill) since the status signal is something like 4.5V.
The alternative (and way better option) is to use a Optocoupler (as seen in this post: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/adding-gate-to-ha.1152276/page-3#post-27988496)

The link posted by @wab512 will give you the best data since it shows if the gate is open, closed, or moving. The reed switch will only tell you closed or not closed. For a gate this is probably sufficient though. The reed switch connect to 2 of the GPIO pins on the SV. If you have this status available you can feed it to your alarm as a trigger if your alarm is also connect to HA. Else you will have to run extra wires from the reed switch to your alarm panel.
