to try and get into home IoT, and noticed my currently installed switch does not have a neutral wire, what would you guys recommend?

I was thinking of just getting an electrician to run one - unless anyone else has ideas or whether the neutral is optional?

You need to pull a neutral wire. You get smart switches which don't require a neutral wire like the lutron caseta range but unless you are willing to part with more money you need to pull that neutral wire.
