Guys

Forgive me if this was posted before ... I really need a quick answer to this question.

Is this a decent camera? The sony Alpha 200 kit that Makro has got for R5999.

I was going to buy the Nikon D40 but my lovely wife told me about this special at Makro.

Your advice please.

Sony Alpha watch

I can vouch for this camera, I bought one a while ago when it just came out. That special is really nice! I got mine for like 8000 without a flash or watch. :( I could kick myself now.

It is a really nice camera, the colour quality especially is amazing. If there is anything else you would like to know just ask I will try and help.

Seems like a decent camera - I'd buy it over the D40 if those were my choices.

The F42 flash is worth a good R2000 on it's own... R5999 is a really good price

edit: R2600!!! http://www.sacamera.co.za/productdetail/SONHVLF42AM/Sony-HVL-F42AM-Flash-.html

edit2: Marine1 and Wynsam have the A100 IIRC. The A200 is a slight upgrade, but is very similar to the A100 - so they should be able to give good advice. I've used the A700 (excellent!!) and the A350 (not bad). Sony inherited Minolta's DSLR expertise and they're making some great cameras.

I went to Makro today and tried out this camera. Unfortunately, I did not find it appealing.

I just does not compare to the Nikon or Canon in terms of ergonomics and fit. I am new to the whole dSLR thing but for my preferences and purposes I found this camera to be too big.

I liked the Nikon D40 and D60. It felt much more solid and professional and size-wise it suited me nicely.

I think I am going to go for a Nikon. Need to research a bit more.

Nikon D40. Bought mine 2 weeks back. Loving every single minute of it. It just feels so comfy and light in my hand. You cant go wrong.

What about a Canon 400D? Very nice camera.

@Genius. - if you dont mind me asking how much did you pay for it and what was included?

Makro got it for R5300. Only body and 18-55mm lens.

I thing it is going to boil down to size and ergonomics for me.

Most of the cameras now are very capable. I di not try the 400D - will do so this weekend.

I pad R4800 for it and it comes with a Nikon training voucher. Its a photography class that lasts the entire day. they explain all the techincal details about your specific camera and each setting. Very much worth it if u ask me.

I tried the Nikon D40's competitors in the Canon range, but the Nikon just felt a whole lot better to me.

This is where i bought mine. http://www.sacamera.co.za/productde...oucher).html?gclid=CKDu6_LL2ZQCFQcUQgodwhQ8lA

How did the course go?

I missed the August course. They do it once a month in Cape Town. They arent having one nxt month. So im gonna have to wait till October. After playing with the camera for two weeks, im pretty keen on going on the course.

Then you cant yet say with certainty that the course is very much worth it. :)

Well for me as a novice photographer - to learn about each setting, white balance, iso's and to basically get taught from 9 - 5 by Nikon about my SPECIFIC camera.

I think it is safe to assume that the course is worth it ;)

Each to his own here. I could stand the ergonomics of the entry level Canons when I was in the market. The 40D is way to small for hands. The Minolta's of old were known for good ergonomics, Sony has seemed to continue that.

I agree that the Nikon feel is generally more substantial. They feel better put together some how. That said you wont find many Sony's falling apart, even after many 10s of thousands of shutter actuations. Sony also have a very good local support crowd if it did though.

That deal at Makro is very good. Nice flash, good entry level camera.

Genius, can you find some information on that training. If it's available elsewhere in the country and what it cost?
