Sony Cameras to support SDHC

he'll find something else to bitch about.

I wonder if this is the start of the demise of Sony's Memory Stick format?
Certainly I think it is a step in the right direction as SD/SDHC is
pretty much the only true global standard these days.
Sony make great cameras, that are always keenly priced. It's their storage-
card format that has always bothered me.
I've owned two Cyber-Shot models and although I mostly use a Lumix
Superzoom camera these days, still use the small and compact W55
which always produces outstanding results!

I don't know why people are so much bothered about Sony's MemoryStick. The Sandisk Extreme III 4GB SD card I have is still slower than the (two years older) Sony Memory Stick pro duo. And it's slightly more expensive ([ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Extreme-III-SDHC-Card/dp/B000QUUFRW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262962195&sr=8-1"]ÂŁ18.99[/ame]) than both Sandisk's Memory Stick([ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-4GB-Memory-Stick-PRO/dp/B000F2WMT0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262962331&sr=8-1"]ÂŁ16.10[/ame]) and Sony's own ([ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/4Gb-Memory-Stick-Pro-Mark/dp/B0017CBB8K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262962175&sr=8-2"]ÂŁ17.00[/ame]). It's not like Sony is the only manufacturer who makes these. So what's the problem?

So it's not even like you're not using the cards anymore....

Its cheaper for the average user.
If I could, I would buy SD cards for my sony

Anyway, that's not what I was commenting on. People are always going on how Memory Stick is not an open/global standard and that it's proprietary. So what? Lots of things we use every day are proprietary.

Its more expensive here from what I have found. Just before I went away in december I went into a couple stores, and all of them wanted a fair bit more for the MS cards than the SD cards. I cant remember the exact prices, buts thats what I found. Maybe Im just not looking in the right places though

Is there a way to convert a Micro SDHC card to a normal Micro SD card?

the thing is i bought a 4 gig micro SDHC card in america but none of my stuff are HIGH CAPACITY things so the card does not register.

Yes, but were you comparing the same speeds? Probably not. From what I can tell, Sony doesn't have memory sticks that are in the same (low) performance bracket as the lower class SD cards. Like for like, there's not much difference.

But again, as I said, I'm not concerned with the price. It's the philosophical argument that I find thoroughly irrelevant.

Yes I agree, almost all of us would ... but then there always has to be a koffiejunkie ;)
The rest of us would prefer to standardise all our cameras using the same storage cards if we could.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to champion the Memory Stick format. I just don't see it as enough of a reason not to buy a Sony camera.

@wayne - re sdhc
i shouldn't imagine so - it's not a matter of form factor, it's a matter of circuitry from what i understand. unless you're lucky enough to be able to flash the firmware with sdhc rom/bios. i managed to do that on my laptop sd reader a while back (flashed from sd to sdhc)

@koffiejunkie
i think the issue is that you go and buy a nice 16gb sd card and it works in all of your devices till you have to use it in your cybershot camera. or you buy a pricey memory stick but you can't use it in other vendor's devices. the concept broadens when you're sharing flash memory and devices with friends. you can argue till the cows come home that sony doesn't force vendor lock-in anymore than the next company. but when a perception remains, its often for a reason.

So it's only really a problem if you're poor enough or stingy enough to use only one card between all your devices. A bit of a paradox, if you ask me.

Ignoring that, the argument of sharing is fine in theory, but what are the practical applications? What are you wanting to put in your camera from another device? Or where do you want to plug in your photos?

Given that every CyberShot I've owned shows up as a storage device when you plug it into a computer (on any OS), and given that every CyberShot I've owned come with the required cables to plug it into most modern TVs, I fail to see why this is such a terrible deal breaker.

but when a perception remains, its often for a reason.

It's a very minority perception, given the sheer number of Sony cameras I see when I'm travelling. Until I see research that show otherwise, I'll continue to consider Sony to be one of the most popular compact camera makers in the world.
