Sony drops 20GB PS3 SKU

Well there goes the sub $500 PS3 unit. Maybe the reason why they dropped was that they were losing more $$$ on every console sold compared to the 60Gb unit.

I don't know how good a move this is. Some ppl really just want a lower end machine for gaming only and blu-ray and now they go and drop it.

The fact that it was never sold here to begin with is probably a good indication that we would've never seen it anyway.

I think the 20Gb unit was mainly a marketing ploy to be honest, to be able to position a Blu-Ray player at $500, which is significant, as that's the price of HD-DVD players.

IMHO I think Sony finally clicked they're up **** creek and need to start paddling - First by ditching the problem: Ken Katuragi and Kaz Hirai, and then by doing some necessary triage. The emotion engine, now the 20GB PS3. They need to move boxes, and more importantly software, fast.

Say what you will, but the 360 is looking, financially, a lot better off right now than the PS3. (Yes! I know it's still making a a loss, and Nintendo is clouting both , it's just looking a lot better off than the PS3, and by MS's admission, they only planned on making a profit in '08 )
