Is the Sony Ericsson a 3G phone or not? According to the SE website at http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=za&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pp1_loader&php=php1_10290&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10290it is, but there's no mention of that on the Vodacom website, nor does the phone come up when you select looking at all 3G phones.

Does anyone know what the story is here? Is its non-listing as a 3G phone anything to do with the fact that it doesn't seem to have a camera on the front, meaning that video calls could not be made? I'm much more interested in using it as a modem, so that wouldn't bother me too much.

It's a 3G phone and currently one of the cheapest around...a friend of mine in the UK is telling me that they're being sold for just under R1000...pretty cheap for a 3G phone.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like you can make video calls with it too - the front camera is just a bit hard to see in the photographs. Wonder what the phone quality is like? I've found the SE phones I've had recently to be pretty good, so the same will hopefully be true of this one.

Played with the V600i, and it rocks. Definitely a 3G phone, much better video quality than the Nokia 6680, and faster too. More or less the same size as the T610/T630 so very compact, whereas the Nokia is a real brick. I'll be getting one myself!

Wait till you've seen the unbranded version of the V600i- K600i- which is an absolute killer..I still say the only downside of the phone is the inability to expand memory...32 MB is just too small for a 3G phone.

Actually, that won't bother me because I use my PDA for most of the functions that would need space on the phone. I just really need the phone to be able to hold my address book and a couple of extras and then offer good telephony and data abilities. Haven't seen the unbranded version in SA yet, though - wonder when it's due?

Nice feature on the K600 is the direct usb cable connection (supplied! )

My wife has one and apart from the tiny number keys it is damn impressive. No memory card is a bit of a pain if you use the camera tho'

What do you mean by "unbranded" ?

Basically means that it doesn't have Vodafone inside and outside the phone. Sometimes the settings on branded phones are locked so it means, for instance, that you can't load MTN GPRS settings on a Vodafone branded phone.

In branded phones the menu icons are also different to an "unbranded" version of the phone. In some of the newer models for instance you can't play MP3's as ringtones without due to Digital Rights Management issues...SonyEricsson offers a DRM packager though which allows mp3 ringtones.

i have a Sony Ericsson V600i. and it is a brialliant phone. only thing a dont like is the dam joystick. sometimes it is very uncoperative. and can be a pain. thats why a similar system like on a nokia should be in place. the camera is brilliant! best ive ever seen. i even use some of the pictures i take as wallpapers on my laptop.
