If you are looking for a basic yet compact digital video camera, this one from Sony does a beautiful job.
I am still amazed at how small some electronic devices are becoming each time I review something new. The notebook is now available as a smaller version called a netbook, and the digital video camera is now the size of your average computer mouse. The reason why Sony can make these models so small is thanks to the fact that this camera records directly to its internal flash memory. It also has a Memory Stick Duo slot, which can also be used for video recording.
This hybrid video recorder sports 4GB of flash memory, allowing for around an hour’s worth of recording – the battery will last about 30 minutes longer. If you use your video camera correctly, this would be more than enough recording time. The DCR-SX40E is aimed at the basic consumer market.
To get your video onto your PC, you simply connect it via USB and use your favourite video-editing suite to add the final touches. The camera is really easy to use: all the buttons are neatly hidden behind the flipout LCD and there is even a dedicated photo button just behind the zoom controls.
