Hey All

Ok,so i think i've decided on my 5.1 setup but wanted to get confirmation from the team.I have my XBOX,LCD(1HDMI,No optical),DSTV(SD) and want to purchase the Sony HT STR500.I can get it for R4600.Seems a bargain.

Will this be fine.It has 3 HDMI in and 1 Out,2 Optical in,DTS.So ideally i would connect my XBOX to the HDMI port on the reciever and then HDMI out to the LCD.Do i still need optical to get sound(5.1).

Check the specs ..Is it worth it?

Some discussion here http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/261770-Home-theatre-recommendations

It's great if you don't need video and sound over HDMI - you would need a receiver with switching for both. If you don't mind having the sound connected via optical etc. and having HDMI for video only, then this is the best bang for buck system there is.

Where you getting it for R4600? Best price I've found is R4999.

Hi Postman

Hirsch's in Gauteng.every 15th of the month, they discount further 15% on all items.

How would i then set it up at home.Do i need to connect HDMI and Optical to receiver and then HDMI out to LCD?Does it support Bravia Sync?

Ok so just returned from the Sony shop.Cool shop but pricey...damn.For a reciever that does HDMI switching and Bravia sync ...starts at R6000 with speakers it totals to R9000.Way out of my budget.
They had the STR500 there and sounds great.I think i will consider this since -
1.I dont have a Sony LCD or PS3 ,so Bravia Sync not required now
2.I am fine with seperate cables for audio and video
3.Fits my budget - R4600.Will upgrade in the next 7 years or so.Ample time to save for the best

Thanks All

Yep!

I thought Hirch's price couldn't be beaten. So stoked to be getting this price in Cape Town. :)

I am in a situation as my wife wants me to do some renovations at home.So until that is done i have to see how much monies are left over.Damn i hate this ..esp when i cant have it now !!

Hmm...have to come up with a way to convince her ...hee hee

Say it'll cost R1000 more when off special... I have looked at pricing of these Sony component systems over time and the prices don't really go down. They have that one set with the 2 sub woofers (the 6.2 set) that's actually gone up in price since a year or 2 ago.

Mine's reserved for tomorrow. :)

Went in this morning, not realising the special only starts tomorrow... Whoops. Thought Game specials always started on Wednesdays, but that's just the leaflet that comes out then.
