Review on DH500 receiver

Pros
1.Excellent sound for your money
2.Simple setup.Easy instructions.
3.Cool and simple remote - Supports Bravia Sync(as per remote)
4.DMP port - Supports IPOD/IPHONE (Device not included)
5.Auto Calibration mic included
6.Can customise your device- You can change the names on the receiver to match your device

Cons
1.Master volume doesn't remember volume levels per input
2.No audio over HDMI - Requires optical for sound

Problems specific to my setup - Since i have an XBOX , i purchased a cable that has Optical and RC (Red and White) .It doesnt allow you to connect HDMI with the standard cable supplied,no space to plug the HDMI cable. So this cable allows for both connections.Works great ,however there is a snag...If i am playing a game on HDMI and then pause it then switch my TV to AV for DSTV and back again to the XBOX,the XBOX restarts.

I have done research and found that since the cable is not Microsoft(from fleamarket),it doesnt do handshaking. So guys beware of this .Its annoying if you want to play music from your box and want to watch a muted channel on DSTV .I think i can live with this for now.

Great setup for a more than basic user.I give it the thumbs up for now :)

Thank you vsingh

Mmm... Would have liked sound over HDMI.
But not the biggest problem.
I will try and get mine today or tomorrow.
It looks like great value for money.

vsingh, I got mine on Thursday.
Great value for money.

How sure are you about no audio over HDMI?

I do not have an HDMI device (except the amp) so I cannot test it.

Juggy, I must say that I am impressed with the amp.
But you should know this is my first proper home theater system.
But it does sound really good.

Mcguwyer -Congrats!I havent tested sound on HDMI.Currently running HDMI from XBox straight to TV and then only optical to receiver.Need another HDMI cable to test.Dont think it supports as it clearly states HDMI passthrough

AFAIK HDMI audio doesn't work. Receiver needs switching for that, or something or other. So audio must be over optical/component etc. and video only over HDMI. You pay a bit more for switching (or what ever it's called). ;)

Guys, the manual clearly stated it allows audio/video over HDMI.

Will check tonight and let you know where in the manual it is.

Even though the manual clearly states this ,it can be misleading.I have done extensive research and also got confirmation from the Sony shop that it doesnt do audio over HDMI hence HDMI passthrough.Would be interesting though to confirm :)

I would say that just refers to passing the audio through the HDMI to the TV or output device. So it allows audio through the cable, it just doesn't decode it & play it through the amp

But surely then the amp isn't HDMI capable?

So if I get a PS3 and watch Blue Ray movies, the TV will provide HDMI sound?
The amp would only play normal sound?

No, you output the audio from the PS3 over optical (setting in XMB) and video over HDMI. The amp decodes audio for the HDMI video input via optical.

If you're buying proper AV receivers then yes but you do get HTiB packages that have HDMI input and process audio via that e.g. Samsung. These are typically your top-of-the-range packages though, not the ones that cost R1000.
