Hey

I have a Sony Optiarc Blu Ray drive from a laptop thats motherboard went faulty. Is there anyway it can be used again in another laptop of a different brand or perhaps the laser unit reused in another machine like a PS3 or something.

If someone knows please let me know or if someone wants to buy it, its in a good condition and i can even show you the laptop it was from, the thing is literally new but costs to repair are not worth it.

As far as I remember, you should be able to use it in another laptop - each manufacturer seems to use their own proprietary "cage" for hard drives and optical drives, so if you have a laptop with a busted optical drive, you should theoretically be able to replace it with your Optiarc - you would just need to remove the "cage" and fit the Optiarc into it.
The laptop should pick up the drive automatically.

I used to do this with my old Dell D620 and the CD or DVD drive - I think it came with a CD-RW drive and I swapped it for a DVD-RW drive - I would think a similar thing could be done with a Blu-ray drive.

If you're willing to part with it, pop me a PM with what you're wanting to get for it - I'd be happy to take it off you for use in my laptop at home ;)

Cheers,
H
