Sony, Sharp or Toshiba LCD?

What will the source be? If it's from composite then it will look pixelated but not to bad, if you can switch the cables for component as this will increase the PQ a bit. Anything SD through an HDMI cable will be perfectly fine, you will watch an old CRT and your TV and say there really isn't that much difference in SD quality. What you will notice is of course your HD content :-D.

The SD quality is not as bad as you are making it out to be, especially depending on the viewing distances, as long as he doesn't sit right up next to it he should be fine. Also he did ask about three LCD's, said his disdain for Samsung and doesn't want a plasma, perhaps just give up on this one?

It's absolutely as bad as I'm making it out to be... I rely on SD TV. I watch it via HDR plasma and 54cm CRT daily. Don't talk nonsense here.

At least the HD PVR does make it slightly better.

I think you've gotten yourself into such a bubble you won't actually see that LCD SD quality is not as horrible as you make it out to be, perhaps one day when it pops you will actually go wow this isn't as bad as I'm making it out to be. Perhaps the TV's you were watching were not configured correctly? I've seen a lot of LCD's and a lot of plasma's and the SD quality isn't as bad as you make it out to be on the LCD's, perhaps non branded ones but not anything from actual brands.

Finally, and this is non-negotiable, the TV has to have a DVB-T2 tuner built in. From what I can see in the spec sheets on Samsung and LG's websites, none of their models have that.

Why the insistence on a DVB-T2 tuner?

Phiri said that if you read the Broadcasting Act, it says that you should be able to buy a TV, switch it on, and receive the signal.

“This is an environment we want to continue with, otherwise we feel we’ll be contravening the definition of broadcasting,” Phiri said.

Kind of makes it difficult when your television doesn't even support the signal.

I have learned to accept the fact that Garbage in=Garbage out with some advice on this forum.

I got myself a PVR just for this purpose. I get crystal clear PQ (SD) and the ability to record free to air channels, and a few extra, for R20pm + R65 (PVR fee). Then no need for any DVB compatibility going forward.

Dude, I have:

19" TN LCD TV
24" TN PC LCD
24" IPS PC LCD
32" PVA LCD TV
42" plasma (used daily for SD TV)
54cm CRT (used daily for SD TV)

Let alone all the configurations my friends have, and the configurations of the stores I regularly visit.

Please do not tell me I am in a bubble.

Your view are most unique - similar to the only one that can see the kings clothes.

i bought the Sony 40" EX400 in october 2010 just before the sony LED LCD's came out (should have waited 3 months before buying lol) and to be honest, watching SD content is a bit of a strain sometimes, but overall its really not that bad... HD channels look really good, especially discovery HD. and blu-rays jus look amazing....the worst channels ever on any tv has got to be the SABC channels... i make a point of it to NEVER watch sabc/etv.... my Sony haven't given me any trouble what so ever... i updated the firmware once and thats it. i can watch what i want, when i want, Full HD, SD, game anytime and everything looks awesome all the time! i mainly bought Sony just because its Sony :p lol

i can tell the OP that you can't go wrong with Sony. the only thing i would have done better is to have gone 46" :(

/yawn

Get a life.

I have one and it's not "Plasma based" for a life. You have an unique position and self appointed career in life, i.e trolling all TV related threads about your Plasma "experience", yet in your view all other MyBB members experiences is null and void.

I have a Sony 32CX520 and it's great for gaming, HD and SD thus no complaints here.

Sad. Your position is even more unique, in that you come to TV related threads to spew one liners about how I am a troll.

No idea what you're on about really. Not my problem if you can't deal with the facts i.e. plasma (esp. 720p) is the better of both evils for SD/TV, and the implication when SD is favoured 60/40.

Grow up?

A little 32". Of course SD will look better, than on >40". SD is not too bad on 32" and smaller LCD.

we have the 46ex520 from sony and i must say the quality is great..however, i noticed that the samsung plays a lot more through usb than the sony does, as i get a lot of problems playing back some movies and series and when i try it with the samsung, even an older one, it plays everything just fine..

if you've got a console or a blu-ray player with USB function, just use that...i have never used my TV's usb ports to play media through so i can't comment on that. its a nice to have especially when upgrading the firmware. i don't think i will ever by any other brand than Sony when it comes to TV's :D
