Hey Guys,

I got a Sony Xperia Z2 last week for my wife. As I type this phone is 9 days old. Wife chose the phone and we got it in purple.

Since Monday we have been on holiday. On Tuesday we filmed a video in the splash pool of my son enjoying the water. Pool was roughly 500mm deep and is fresh water. Well below the IP58 limit. Phone functioned fine after and yesterday. Yesterday we were on the beach where a few pics were taken and also no problems. (Was not used in water at the beach) Last night my wife wanted to take a picture of the sunset and when looking at the photo she was surprised it was so blurry and even more surprised when she noticed condensation on the camera lens.

Since then the screen has also been playing up. The drop down menu to access quick settings (swipe down from top of screen) is not responding as well as the auto rotation of the screen.

One thing I noticed is that if you look down from the top of the phone through the headphone jack you can see the screen light. This is a bit of a surprise since it is not necessary to block this before submerging in water. Possibly entered through the headphone jack?

Unfortunately a phone call to Vodacom just confirmed what I was afraid of. Phone is out of 7 day exchange. Either way it would need to be booked in to a repair centre.

Purpose of this thread?

Well since experiencing this I have seen a lot of similar cases online. I will be updating this thread with regards to the repairs/replacement etc. I am very keen to see Vodacom's response.

If anyone has experienced a similar issue please post here with all information.

What happened?
Was it repaired?
Was it replaced?
Were you charged to repair it?
Did you claim from insurance?

And if any of you have been using your Z2 in water often let us know.

Obviously I have insurance on the phone but IMO this is Vodacom's baby and or Sony. Insurance is my last option.

Here is link to clip I recorded. Uploaded from my S3. (We on holiday) Looks like it cut a few seconds of video at end.

I will update on the progress of the repair/replacement etc.

Been using my Z2 for almost 4 months now never had any problems of a day old. Had it plenty in the water even had to jump in the pool once or twice when my son fell in still working as good as it did on day 1.

sorry about your phone man. I have a Z1 compact and have used it in the pool a couple of times with absolutely no issues.. but I will be watching this thread in case something does go wrong...

didn't have any issues with mine last time I jumped in the pool with my Z1. Was at MTN 2 weeks ago to get the USB flap replaced and asked the lady helping me about the water damages that I've been reading about and she confirms that there's alot of Z's coming in for repair which they didn't honor as they blame the user not properly closing off the ports...

Brand new from the box Sony Xperia Z2 had a gap next to the power and volume buttons upon delivery. Glue was even showing where outer band was coming unstuck from the phone. Returned it pronto and got a new one that I vowed to never put in water...

Pity I'm failing to upload the pic of the phone...(Pic size is 1.07Mb)

As per mentioned in the Z2 thread, here is my story

What happened?
I was at a foam party, filming myself and other people dancing in the foam. Both cameras had condensation. Left it overnight in uncooked rice and all was well again.

2 weeks later, I submerged my phone in the pool ( not fresh water, i know) took a few pics, condensation happened again. A few hours later the camera failed to start. Left it in uncooked rice for 4 days, camera still dead.
Was it repaired?
Sent it for repairs back to Orange SA last friday. They confirmed recieving the phone 2 days ago. So next week I will phone asking for feedback.
Was it replaced?
Don't know, but I hope so!
Were you charged to repair it?
Probably not, 3 months old so warantee should cover it
Did you claim from insurance?
Not insured

It sounds like your phone filled up with water.
Even your right speaker stops working.
I think it could be the mic that caused that.

Thanks for replies guys.

I will be booking it into Vodacom tomorrow.
However in the event that this becomes an uphill battle (which in all honesty is what I am expecting) it is currently lying a few centimetres below rice with the hope that it can be salvaged.

3 days is the minimum for a phone to dry out in rice.

I would just ask for a replacement. That phone is not supposed to do that.

Used my z2 in swimming pool many many times. No problems at all - good luck man.

Is there no Sony store where you can take it or does Vodacom need to sort it out?

No local Sony store. So going to Vodacom. I also called the Sony Xperia Care centre. Got a contact in case I am not happy with Vodacom response. I have seen online that Xperia centres vacuum test a phone to ensure that it is in fact sealing properly so maybe I will go that route if I dont come right.

Ok. So phone has been booked in at Vodacom. All my means of persuasion and requests for a replacement fell on deaf ears. The phone (according to the technician) will be sent to Sony for assessment. Turn around time roughly 7 working days.

Guess ill have to fire up the old S3 for misses so long.

Who chose the phone? You or the missus?

I've had my Xperia Z3 Compact for a few weeks now and I haven't let it anywhere near water. I think it's good to know that if I answer a call in the rain the device will be OK, but more as peace of mind. I'm certainly not going to submerge it, take underwater photography.

You put it in rice over night so that the rice attracts Asians and when they get to it they see the phone and fixes it for you :D

So I got the phone back. Got an sms from Vodacom on Friday to collect. Went there yesterday morning.

They say the phones main board was replaced. It now also has a new IMEI number. It appears to be a new phone even had the plastic packaging protection on the back amd front which new phones have. But apparently it is not a new phone so I dunno. No charge. Must admit I was pleasantly surprised.

But none of this tells me how the water actually got in and was it a manufacturer problem or faulty unit?

Needless to say my wife never wants to take the phone near water again. Ever.

Hi stangV2 please can you tell me how you sorted the problem or who you spoke to as I had the exact same problem and sony are refusing to fix my phone. Thanks a lot

Hi Shaun.

I took phone into a vodacom repair centre and that's it. Like I said I was pleasantly surprised. I believe the phone was also sent to an advanced repair centre.

But..

The mic ain't working right since we got it back and now this morning my wife sent me an email that the phone has died and refuses to switch on..

So back to Vodacom I go.
