Sony Xperia Z2 Water Damage Thread

Sounds typical for these Sony "waterproof" phones. Has been as issue since the original Z. Apparently water damage is non-repairable due to the manufacturing process. A friend was basically told to get stuffed by Sony (by way of MTN).
 
Sony's Customer service in SA is not great at all , I had to go through endless issues with a Sony Z1 and its infamous touch screen issues , I went through 2 new units and then requested a Credit (both units did not even last the 7 day out of box warranty period ) . That took 3 weeks of endless fighting and I even ended up speaking to the Sony Marketing manager of SA as well , I eventually got my Credit and was able to choose a different device .

Iv had a couple of staff at work have the whole waterproof fight with Sony as well on their devices and neither of them got their devices repaired or replaced by Sony . Personally if I ever had to get another Sony I would regard the waterproof feature more as a feature for if the device got wet accidentally ,but would never take it in the pool etc as there just seems too many issues with having to get it sorted here in SA . I am not too sure what Sony's customer services are like abroad ,but here in SA from personal experience not the greatest at all . Iv had much better Customer service from Samsung and LG in SA .

I had the unfortunate experience of the exact same thing happening to me with my Z2 - Previously took some shots in the pool with no problem. I landed up in the pool with the phone in my pocket (yes all the ports with properly closed) and never though of it again until the next morning when realizing my phone is dead. Both cameras had water droplets on them on the inside of the phone - I have now searched on the internet on this issue and seems there are plenty plenty complaints regarding this and absolutely no help or positive response from Sony. All the complaints has similar symptoms with their phones where screens die and cant switch on / off, non responsive touch on the screens etc. etc.

I have decided to go through my insurance company and just get this sorted out this way as I am not in the mood or have the time to fight this battle - I just need to submit a damage report and a cost estimate to get it fixed or if not able to be fixed a replacement quote.

The "Waterproof" claim from Sony is a total ball of rubbish and seems the consumer is to blame in almost all the cases where phones went in for testing.

If you have a Z2 (and I see same issues with Z3 phones) dont ever think the "waterproof" claim is true - you are going to loose your expensive phone in the process.
 
Hi Everyone

Same thing happened to me, On Christmas day while swimming with my nephew, I decided to take a few pics of the little guy while under water, I did after all have a waterproof Sony Xperia Z2....I will admit, I did have massive trepidation, and made extra sure all ports were closed PROPERLY, I then took in under the water for less than a minute, then the screen died, and subsequently the phone was completely dead.

I got in contact with Sony mobile ZA on their Facebook page, to inform them of this, they instructed me to take it to MTN, Which I did, today i found out that the device came back from Sony, as "unrepairable" and i immediately phoned the Sony call centre to find out when i can expect my replacement phone, Turns out, on the job card it says that "severe water damage due to ports not closed"...So basically the middle finger from Sony...I have again gone back to their facebook account and they requested the IMEI number to assist me...Lets see what happens
 
I wonder if they even do a proper seal test or whether they just resort to blaming the customer?

Well according to what I have read online if you experience a problem a Sony Centre will vacuum test the phone to ensure its integrity. I think people who experience these water problems should demand that.
 
Yeah, I would not trust my Z2 to remain sealed, especially after the flap issues I have had where it spontaneously pops open once in a blue moon, and that one extremely irritating time where it would not stay closed no matter what.

The Best thing you could do is check if the Phone is waterproof BEFORE putting it in water. Hint is not mine but I forgot who posted it before, sorry. To check it you have to close all flaps and call *#*#7378423#*#*, then go to service test and pressure sensor. With all flaps closed press gently on the screen, if pressure will increase that means the Phone is waterproof

I'm too lazy to see if this works

Wow! It works. Thanks for this. I am sure a lot of ppl will be interested in this.

Is there perhaps and official Z2 thread where this can be a sticky of some sort?
 
I'm no science fundi, but the one comment on xda-developers says you should see the pressure spike and then return to the previous value. Surely if it's watertight then the pressure should remain elevated until you stop exerting force on the screen?

I exerting pressured or a few seconds and the pressure reduces / reverts back to normal after a couple of seconds.

Seeing the same. Mine settles at 1017.6 with no touch. Spikes when you touch AND hold and returns to 1017.6 with holding.
