Sony Xperia ZR

yeah seems like a pretty amazing phone in terms of specs and size. Also looks great

Ai what a shame....

The xperia ZR basically seems to be a fully waterproof xperia V:

Sure the ZR is running a quad core cpu but still only at 1.5ghz while the V runs a dual core at the same speed and only has 1gb of ram. The V even has a better display in terms of pixel density, but then that's probably because it's smaller.

My upgrade is due and I just can't bring myself around to the idea of either the S4 or xperia Z simply because of their massive size. A 4.3 inch display is fine for phone!

Has anyone looked at the HTC One yet?

I have a Z. You get used to it quickly. Other phones are tiny now.

Chevron,

The Z looks gorgeous but I'm worried about it being fragile... and of course there's that 5 inch display. Soooo big. I'm sure you do get used to it but I can't get my head around it :wtf:

I'm going to try and find an HTC One today for a comparison, see if the 4.7 inch display feels any more reasonable.

lol dont be fooled by the fragile appearance of the Z!! I have accidentally dropped mine a few times now and it is still in one piece and free of any scratches....kinda surprised at how tough this phone is :wtf:

And regarding the size....it grows on you lol. Reading/browsing online and texting is such a pleasure on the 5inch screen and it took me about a day to get used to the 'big' screen. Only issue for me is that sometimes the phone doesnt fit properly in my pockets

The one is actually longer due to the front facing speakers.

My Z is super durable. Have dropped it on concrete and even bled over it. It just keeps on going.

lol mine even had a few drops of frying oil spilled on it....just took a wet cloth and washed my phone :D its fun having a waterproof phone

Ok, so it's fragile appearance doesn't hide a fragile construction then... that lovely glass back had me worried. I was excited about the Z from when I first read about it... but was thrown by it's size when it finally arrived. So far it seems both of you have come to terms very quickly with the size though.

Does the Z offer swype for text input?

What made you go for the Z over the S4... was it the ip57 rating? It may be worth waiting for the S4 Active then...

Yup it does offer swipe for text input.

As convenient as it is to have a ip57 rated device, it is not something I take into consideration when choosing a phone. I simply love Sony devices and my last 5 phones were all from Sony. I chose the Z above the S4 for 3 main reasons: 1. The Z looks million times better!! 2. I'm not a fan off Samsung's Touchwhiz UI and for me it is too cartoon-ish and cluttered compared to Sony's UI which is smooth, minimalistic and also looks great. 3. I prefer LCD screen with natural colours instead of the AMOLED screen.

Basically just comes down to personal preferences. Lots of gimmicks and customizations(UI) = Samsung / Modern design, smooth and beautiful UI = Sony

The Z is far from being perfect but all things considered I would say it is definitely one of the better devices (for me personally) currently available in terms of balance between design, functions and performance.

Lol and if for some reason I had to get the S4...I would take the LTE version which has a Snapdragon S600 processor instead of the Octa-core International version.

:)

My thoughts exactly... happy with my 4 incher at the moment... not sure I want to go all the way to 5...

Pity it is not coming to RSA. Will check if the Orange shop sell it.

It has been a few months down the line regarding the ZR coming to SA. Any changes? I finally decided on a phone that I really like and now I see that it may not be coming to SA.
