Sony's 40GB PS3 due 28 October?

Rumours that Sony is preparing a cut-price 40GB PlayStation 3 may have been dismissed by the consumer electronics giant as "speculation", but evidence is mounting that just such a box is indeed coming later this month.

Would be nice to see a competatively priced PS3 out there. (Or more importantlly out here). $400 using Ster Kinekor's exchange rate would give us this at R4000. Less than the 360 Elite and not much more than the Premium.
 
If ster kinekor could hit like R3999 I think it would really really boost sales of the ps3, most people I know that complained about the initial price of the ps3 said that if it were priced around R400 they would def get one.
 
Yeah, sadly the US cuts on the now defunct 60gb models wasnt valid for other regions so I dont think SK will even bother to change any pricing or send different models down here. Now if they could only offer a PS3 with a spare rumble controller & 2x game vouchers then it would be interesting. Selling the console with old games isnt cutting it for many people.

Yeah, at 4k I'll be in line to buy one. Makes me wonder why they don't drop the HDD totally. My understanding is that unlike the XBox, it can take just about any HDD? So sell it for R3500 and tell thee user to supply his own HDD.

Not a bad idea about dropping the hard drive, but I guess your average console gamer is such cos they dont wanna have the hassles of a pc i.e. hardware installations.

@Useless I totally disagree about your comment on the "old games". If you are buying a ps3 console then presumably you wouldnt have any games yet and RFOM and Motorstorm are two excellent titles for the PS3.
Definately two titles well worth the time, so I dont see why a new ps3 gamer would have any problem recieving these games!
 
The problem with just dropping the HDD is that the box is then non-functional and most people buy consoles for a "plug in and play", not "**** I have to go and buy another component to play". besides Sony is probably getting the drives a lot cheaper than one would be able to get retail.

My guess would be that @$400 it'd probably land here around R4500, although I saw something today that suggest the EU model (typically) is going to be around €450, not 400, but we'll have to wait for them to announce to know for sure.

With the brand affinity I think a PS3 at even R4500 could be a contender this Xmas. I'm interested to see if MS will respond in turn. Just upgrading the core will not be enough.
 
How did $400 turn into 450 Euro's???
Isnt the Euro stronger than the Dollar?
Also is it the UK or the EU which influence our prices?

Always does. Do a little comparison on the prices for the same thing on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk. It's not just in SA that we get screwed. And hence the entire point of DVD Zones. Got stop the Europeans buying from US suppliers.
 
I see today there are other leaks of it popping up in Europe, specifically Italy for €400, so I think y'all can breathe a sigh of relief ;)

In my opinion the backwards compatibility is not really an issue since I have a PS2 and I'm pretty sure most people that want a PS3 and wanna play PS2 games do too. If you buy the 40GB PS3 and wanna play PS2 games and don't have a PS2 they are pretty cheap second hand. The size of the HDD doesn't seem a problem to me since as I understand it the PS3 uses a standard 2.5" HDD so it should be pretty easy to swap if you wanna and 2 less USB ports and no card reader shouldn't be a problem either but if you still want all those things you'll be able to pick up the 60GB model for a R1000 less,
 
Yeah I agree about not needing backwards compatibility but I am worried about how many people will buy it with the belief that it has backwards compatibility...

Somehow I don't see SK advertising this feature being removed. I couldn't care less about the card reader or the extra USB ports either... However if they just dropped the Blu-Ray white elephant and released a R3000 model I would be very very tempted.
 
They will never drop the BD support and I dont think that they should either. RFoM, UT3, Ratchet and Clank, more and more ps3 games are too big for DVD, and hence Blu ray!

I think you are 100% right and they will never drop BR. It's a strategic thing for them to help sell BR. Abandoning it now would be almost an admission of defeat (even if they are winning).

But I think if they hadn't put the BR in and released at the same price as an XBox ..... Well. Different ball game really.
 
just received an email that 40gb PS3 available now in uk for 280pounds - that is just under R4000
 
Hmm. $600 = R6800
So I also reckon $400 = R4500'ish

They can't drop BR, ever, simple because, as abev said, it's core feature set, ie it breaks the golden console rule "Every console X game, must play on every console X"
 
What would they have removed that would make backward compatibility impossible? I thought they had made big improvements to the software emulation.
