Sony's top executives to return bonuses: Nikkei

Can you imagine someone proposed that to Telkom or Eskom? They would say no, fire 2000 workers instead.

Yip.. Eskom would rather let the whole country sit without power than to give back money to re-invest into the power grid...
 
So, Sony does televisions, computers, phones and Playstation. The rest are small fry. Now they are not so sure about televisions (although the story is confusing) and computers.
Premium phones are doing well, but the big money is in mid-range handsets, I suspect.
That means only PS as a cash cow.

Good move this, maybe now the boys at the top will put in the graft required to get Sony into a better position.

Or just send in Godzilla.

Their financial services and music divisions are coining it. The camera and film divisions are doing fairly well. They made a small profit with the video games division, which is very good considering the costs involved with launching a new console. Their 'chips and components' division isn't doing too badly either. It's the TV, audio, phone and PC stuff that's losing billions.

Ditching the PC division will definitely help. Losing TV's would also probably help a lot, but I doubt Sony is keen to do that.

What I don't understand is why Sony doesn't realise that consumers just want quality goods at reasonable prices. Samsung is destroying them in the TV, phone and PC markets, yet Sony products are no worse. Perhaps their manufacturing costs have tied Sony's hands, but then they need to overhaul themselves in that regard.

Sony cares about build quality while Samsung doesn't. As seen from above, some people just want the cheapest.

Well, at some point, a product is good enough. TVs are a good example. The Samsung and LG stuff are good enough. Very few people need a (supposedly) more premium Sony.

I think Samsung's supply chain and regional marketing is a whole lot better than Sony.

I think Samsung is just smarter than Sony. Samsung make fantastic TV's, phones and other products. Sure, the build quality isn't always the best, but it's perfectly acceptable to most people. Samsung have established themselves as a very premium TV brand.

Sony doesn't have to ditch their airs and graces, as that is part of the company's identity, but if they can't match the prices of Samsung's top-end products then they should initiate an emergency restructuring. Being priced higher than the maximum people need to pay for good quality is not a good place to be.

I think I read that Samsung spends more on marketing than the next top 4 company marketing budgets combined. This should tell Sony how effective marketing is.

All the Sony divisions you mentioned lose Sony billions on aggregate. The only reason Sony still exists is because of their financial services, camera and music divisions.
