Jax's Break from the Shadows
A few years down the line, round about 2013, Jax was deep in the syndicate's grip, no more the fresh-faced boet from the farm but a hardened ou, his jagged scar a badge of the kak he'd seen. He'd been dragged into their world after that bloody night, forced to run errands across the borders—smuggling rhino horn, diamonds, and those weird glowing bits from desert crashes that the big bosses flogged to shady collectors overseas. The Kalahari nights were his playground now, riding shotgun in beat-up bakkies under stars that felt mocking, his cowboy hat pulled low to hide the fire in his eyes. But inside, the revenge boiled like a braai fire left too long, waiting for the right moment to blaze up. He learned their ways quick, ja—how to spot a tail, how to handle a knife without blinking, how to keep your trap shut when the heat was on.
One sticky evening in a dodgy shebeen on the edge of Kimberley, after a long haul dodging border patrols, Jax slipped away from the crew for a breather. The place was pumping with kwaito beats and the stink of cheap beer, but he found a quiet corner out back, the air thick with dust and the hum of crickets. His body ached from the road, muscles tight like coiled wire, and his mind raced with flashes of his folks' screams, mixed with the thrill of the chase. Alone in the shadows, leaning against a rusted fence with the moon peeking through, he let his guard drop. His hand wandered, a rough, needy grip over the worn denim, fingers working the tension free in slow, deliberate strokes, the rhythm building like a storm rolling in from the veld.
The sensations hit hard, waves crashing through him, layer on layer, hot and urgent under the night sky. He bit his lip, eyes shut tight, imagining breaking free—riding wild across the plains, no chains, no bosses barking orders. His breath came ragged, body shuddering with each pull, the heat spreading like wildfire, peaks drawing out in a gritty, solo release that left him gasping, knees weak against the fence. It was raw, bru, a stolen moment of control in a life gone sideways, fueling that inner spark to fight back.

But the break came soon after, in a dusty warehouse deal gone pear-shaped. The syndicate was fencing a big haul of those alien relics—glowing shards that hummed like they were alive, pulled from a fresh crash near the Botswana line. Jax was on guard duty, revolver tucked in his belt, when a rival crew ambushed. Bullets flew like fireworks on Guy Fawkes, blood splattering the concrete, and in the chaos, Jax turned on his own. He plugged the boss-man who'd ordered his folks' hit, a clean shot through the chest, then grabbed a bag of the relics and bolted, tires screeching into the night. The chase was on, syndicate dogs howling after him, but he knew the bush like his own scars—dodging through dry riverbeds and thorn thickets, losing them in the dawn light.

Free at last, but marked forever, Jax headed south, trading the Kalahari's endless sands for the urban sprawl of Joburg's underbelly. He fenced what he could of the relics on the black market, enough to buy a battered truck and a fresh start, his revolver now a talisman against the ghosts. The cowboy life was his cover—herding cattle on borrowed ranches by day, but nights were for hunting leads on more crashes, piecing together the puzzle of those glowing visitors that had wrecked his world. Whispers in dive bars led him to Hillbrow, where fates would tangle with a Czech beauty and a silver-haired stranger, but that's a yarn for another fire.

And so Jax's freedom sparked, his break from the shadows a fierce ride into the unknown, his story echoing like thunder over the flats.
