Hey there,

Admittedly I am very clueless regarding hosting, DNS and the like. Unfortunately I have run into a problem and I am unable to resolve this.

A few months ago I had registered a personal domain and had it hosted. Unfortunately I didnt look properly so I didnt notice that you cant have a recurring payment with them. I have to pay it each and every single month manually (which is too much hassle). I decided to transfer my hosting to a different company that does recurring payments (Cybersmart). I did the transfer yesterday and and not too long after that I got confirmation from the domain registrar that it has been done. When I do a whois Cybersmart now hosts the domain and everything seemed to be fine.

Unfortunately it has now come to light that the name server still points to the old company. I have spent hours today trying to fix it, but I have been not been able to. The old company cant change the name server because "the requester is not the domain owner". Cybersmart has that honor.

Cybersmart then told me that I must sort it out with the registrar. Cybersmart also told me that they have a problem with the server I am hosted on. The last contact I had with them was when they gave me the contact details of the old hosting company but they didnt quite explain to me what I should do.

Clearly somewhere someone can do something to fix this. The old host tells me one thing, and the new one tells me something different. Can someone please tell me who is the people that can fix this for me (old host or new host) so I can get it sorted. I am close to just giving up and cancelling the payment and forgetting the idea behind having my name as my personal domain. I can always just register it again when the domain expires.

Not an expert here, but hope this help.

1) Short term fix = Get the IP of your new host - try and access your DNS settings at the old provider and manually edit them to the new IP. NOTE: Reduce the records from XXXXXX to 600 - this will ensure the new ip is implemented quicker. Normally they provide the IP's with the installation email or through your control panel.

2) Transfer the domain that normally takes 24 hours from the old to the new host. Note that you might sit with old caching records - meaning your computer, router or provider must update the new DNS settings to point to the new place. Dont worry, this will eventually come right between 6 to 12 hours i guess.

Sure if I left anyone out that someone will comment.

Hi dakeyras

Sorry to hear about the issues that you are running into. Im not too sure on Cybersmart's domain management system so cant give the correct answer straight off the bat. It sounds like either they did not update the name server at the time of transferring the domain (I doubt this though), or that the dns servers didnt respond to ZACR's DNS checks.

Feel free to PM me the details and I will try assist where possible and point you in the right direction.
