I'm busy sorting some of my photos and wondered if the 'modified date' (right click photo > properties) is the date I took them for sure? Is there anyway I could have changed this modified date by mistake?

Oh - I've just answered my own question : no :(

I have some Christmas photos with a date of 31 December. How can I find out for sure when photo's are taken? What is the modified date?

I have one or two photos here that I do know the date, but the EXIF isn't updated (I probably hadn't set the date on the camera ...).

Is there anyway I can edit EXIF?

Don't reply purely on EXiF data.

Setup a nice system for your photos.

For example, under My Pictures, make a folder named Photos
under Photos have a year, and within there a folder with dates + short description.

So you'd have a system that looked a bit like:
My Pictures\Photos

Code:
[FONT="Courier New"][FONT="Lucida Console"][FONT="Fixedsys"]
├───2002
│ ├───04-00 G-string shopping for my mom
│ ├───15-06 Getting arrested
│ └───16-14 My goatse collection
├───2003
│ ├───01-17-24 Vacation with Xenu
├───2004
│ ├───05-12 MyADSL Lingerie Party

It's a bit overboard, but once you have that in practise you won't have much trouble finding your stuff :)

Nice but why not use one of the freely available photo organising apps like Picasa?

Because:

1) If you want to switch to another system, you might have some problems migrating your collection.

2) I prefer to do it myself :)

And I'm sure Picasa will still use your photos in the above mentioned filing system.
