On my laptop my files are a bit scattered all over the place. For example I will have movies in different folders. I now want to sort the files so that all movies will be in the same folder. Is there any good software that will automatically scan my pc for movies ( based on extention) and then move them to a predefined folder ?

Its not just with my movies I want to do this but also music, etc.

Hope I make sense.

I'm not sure if something like this exists. I was working on an application like this a few months back, but later just lost interest in it. I do actually have something that can scan your hard drive(s) for MP3s, movies, and ISO files and report their locations in a CSV file. Doesn't move anything automatically at this stage though. It just made it easier to share your list of movies/music/games with friends in case they wanted anything.

EDIT: Someone else was working on something similar about a week ago, but I don't think his solution traverses your entire hard drive. Also, his solution replaces files with the same file name, regardless of contents. So I would be cautious.

For your music you can get Mediamonkey to scan your drive for files. Then use it to move the entire collection to a new destination. It can also do file renaming based on tag while it is doing this. Be careful - software that can do this sort of thing can usually also delete all your files if you mess up.

A while ago I sorted out movies from the command line using wildcards to move and rename. Don't know of any GUI software for this.

I believe only MediaMonkey Gold can do this, which requires a paid licence.

I did this a couple of years ago with the standard version so maybe things have changed since then. At that stage Gold was needed for automatic background sorting while the standard version could do manually initiated sorting.

Another good one for sorting out a hard drive full of music is MusicBrainz. This is for people who have the time to figure it out. Unfortunately they made it intuitive to use.
