This week started out crap and ended crap.

Yesterday I was playing on the PC and I didn't notice it started raining. Next thing I hear a lightning bolt and immediately proceeded to put the PC off. When the lightning eventually passed I put the machine on again. It started up, but kept on getting stuck on the mobo info screen (press del for BIOS). I couldn't access the BIOS and the keyboard light didn't come on.

I proceeded to take out and put back the following parts :

1. Ram
2. CPU
3. Graphics card

I also reset the BIOS.

When plugging it in again, I can access the BIOS, but it picks up the DVD Rom, but not the HDD. When I only have the DVD connected it starts up faster than when I connect the HDD as well.

When putting in the Herin's boot disk, it comes to the menu to start with Windows or the Boot CD, but I can't access this through the keyboard (ie keyboard doesn't work here, but it does in the BIOS  )

I'm hoping that the fact that it starts up the mobo / CPU / RAM / Graphics are fine. Is there a possibility that maybe I popped something on the MOBO or could it be my HDD.

Any ideas of what could be wrong here, guys?

PS - I had to cart my Iburps modem to my parent's place to come post this, because I'm so stressed out and couldn't wait till tomorrow. :o

Windows XP Pro
Mobo : GA-P35-DS3L/S3L
2GB Ram
500GB Seagate HDD

PS - If it is my HDD, is there any way I could get any info off it still. I have backups of most of it, but not of my Dead Space user file which I just completed the weekend

try plugging your hd onto another computer, either via ext usb case(easier) or just use a sata/ide.

If you hard drive picks up your hd then backup your files. If it doesnt use a program called undelete. You need the full version of the app(trial version doesnt let you copy big files(try mininova.org)) and a spare hd to copy your files onto.

I have a similar problem with my old amd. I think it could be the mobo/cpu cos the hd works and i think the other parts as well.

Goodluck mate! It sucks when something like this happens. Next time make sure to buy a plug that has lightning resistance or something.

If u search around here there are a lot of people having problems with the 500Gb Seagate HDD. So I think it could be your HDD.
Do u have a usb keyboard?
Just make sure u did not by chance knocked the HDD data cable loose(sata)

Powered down, Switched off at the plug, or unplugged from the wall?

First thing I'd do is try the hdd on the CD-Rom's IDE and see if it picks it up.

Plug in a serial(converter usb2serial) keyboard it should then work in Herin's.

Sounds like that drive is dead. Try the USB option... but this sounds like hardware gone bibi.

Sounds like HDD is gone XEN.... Pity about your Dead Space files. If the bios not seeing it, then nothing will I guess.

You guys are not going to believe this. I sent the HDD back and waited the whole week for the replacement. I get it, rush home (only pitstop to buy Far Cry 2) to install everything, just to sit with the same problem.

Take the whole shebang (PC & all) to RTT computers in Clearwater to sort out. The replacement HDD I got was also a dud, so I bought a Western Digital instead and will continue the fight to get a *working* replacement HDD.
