sound card for vista

Hi,

I have two problems. Since i have moved over to Windows Vista my Sound Blaster Live! has finally been outdated. Getting the thing working for XP was a mission enough so I couldn't be bothered trying with Windows Vista.

To cut a long story short the WDM Microsoft drivers so not recognise the card as a surround sound card, so i still get stereo sound but would like my surround sound back.

Today i had a brainwave and thought of using my M/B onboard sound card which is one of those cheap realtek thingies which unfortunately also is not recognised as surround sound (even though the M/B booklet says it is).

Obvioulsy Windows Vista is fairly new and there is the big wait for h/w manufactures to create drivers.

Anyway... can anyone reccomend a new decent sound card. I am looking at the external Creative Audigy/Extigy/Woteva USB sound card (although i am desperately running out of USB ports.)

I got Windows Vista on my onboard sound and it works. Gonna upgrade the soundcard soon to a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum PCI Sound Card so I hope it will work with that, but it's new so it should.

Have you tried looking for drivers? I did not need new drivers for my sound (Realtek nogal) and I got some Vista drivers for my Nvidia card, which was a surprise

yeah i have got the onboard card to work. its a SoundMax 1800 or some thing like that. But have to use the WDM drivers which currently don't support surround :(


From what i have been reading Creative are being pretty slack with regard to Vista drivers and have dropped support on some of their cards for Vista, so check up before you buy the X-Fi or any creative card for that matter.
 
Damn, I will, thanks...That will be super crappy if they don't support the card:( I found some software that does not work...Alcohol 120% and Daemon Tools. hmm

Hardware wise everything is working

Somehow i doubt they'll drop support for X-Fi in Vista, i mean it IS their flagship range of cards.

Yeah, I can't see why they would anyway. One of my friends as a Fatal1ty X-fi card. I'll ask him if he has any problems

Could I ask in a non factitious manner, but why did you choose to upgrade to Windows Vista? Is there any productivity benefit you expect from the upgrade? So far as you see you already having to outlay for a new soundcard where the old one could probably have served you fine, as it was.
Why not stay with XP?

they don't have much of a choice but support it. Either that or they close down. Unless they're releasing an entire new range of cards that'll cover all the different market segments. But that's kinda unlikely IMO.

I'm sure Creative will have drivers out by 31 Jan.

because people move on?

People said the same thing when XP came out, why not stay with 98 or 2000?

I downloaded the 64bit version and it works 100%!!! Thanks man. I thought I had the latest.

Got my WinAmp working as well. Just gaming is still a problem. The Nvidia drivers are BETA so it has problems.
 
I am so glad I bought a machine which has the Windows Vista Capable sticker on, no worries for me :D

IMO if you don't do proper research before buying any sort of product / item, you must be prepared for anything. No complaints will be accepted if it could have been prevented.

As in the case of Vista, it is well-known that there are devices (but for a select few) which are not fully compatible yet, due to the commercial release of Vista only happening in Jan.

three reasons why I upgraded to Vista.

We are starting a joint project with MS South Africa and their new XAML standard and using their new products to do it in. Microsoft Expressions ect which are designed specifically for Vista (albeit they work in XP with some extra downloads ect - but you know what MS is like.)

I love technology and wanted to see what vista is like.

In my spare time i create electronic music and it was time to put my four year old SB to rest and move into the new world. Today i bought a SB X-Fi and it works well with Vista (using beta drivers)

creative have released BETA drivers for Audigy and X-Fi cards.

just bought an X-FI and loving it :D

Now why would I be so dumb and stupid and download some dodgy cracked warez version if Microsoft sends me a nice legit copy as part of our MSDN subscription ???.

You should perhaps consider sticking to using XP since it is a bit simpler.

actually i downloaded it from MS cuz we are a Silver Partner and are working together with MS SA in the new XAML projects (as mentioned above, but how can i expect a fool to have any hindsite), but then i suppose your lower class mentality has huge clashes with your mediocre class mind.

as mentioned in above posts why i moved to vista, however your actions remind me of how persistent stupid people can be.
