Sound cards

There must be something very wrong then. With a Xonar there should be absolute silence, it's the first thing you notice coming from onboard sound, how quiet the silence is. Could it be the speakers?

There was silence when i used the card for the first few months but it just happened from one day to the next.
( im not trying to hijack this thread but i hope we can figure this out together)

I will try and look at my irq settings later and see what i find.

Have you tried the card in another PC? It sounds like it could also be the DAC for the front channels that might be busted, but the chances of the exact same thing happening on 2 cards is pretty astronomical.

It happened on the esquire testbed too. Then they tried again, and it didn't.

I'm confused.

IRQs: it's taken IRQ 12, which is also used by my USB controller... how do I change this?

You should be able to change it in the device manager, I think. I haven't messed around with IRQ/DMA settings since Windows 98 though.. actually since 95. My cards just worked great automatically. The fact that your other channels are fine makes me think an IRQ conflit isn't the problem though. They'd all have the same problem.

I agree.

Can't change in device manager, windows reports no conflicts - so it won't let me.

Bad batch of cards perhaps? But I don't understand why it (sorta) started working the second time they tried on their test rig. I say sorta, cos their rig suddenly kept hanging - but that could have been because they used the vista drivers that came with the card..

If you purchase latest technology of computer than you have to purchase sound card and its necessary for create best sound. Now a days sound cards inbuilt in your computer If you need another sound cards than you have to purchase this card in the market.

No **** sherlock. I thought I could find a card buried at the end of the rainbow.

Does it have the power connector, and did you connect it? I have a Xonar Xense now and had a Xonar DX before, they both need an FDD power connector. Also does the same problem occur when you switch to headphone output? Either front or rear panel?

Edit: LOL @ all the Chinese spambots today :D

I looked at some pics on Google, doesn't seem like the DG has one. It would be hard to miss if it did, it's in the same place as the PCIe power connector on a graphics card. Still, I'd try the headphone output, especially on the front panel. If the same problem is still there it's likely the front DAC that's screwed up.

I have no front panel ...

Also it's not interference. FL and FR do NOT play any sounds at all apart from the noise.

Yeah, I saw that which is why I didn't think it was interference and went straight for busted DAC chip. I just thought maybe changing slots might help. Pity about the front panel though since that could at least eliminate some possibilities.

I did try different slots on the original card btw :(
Last two things to try- gonna remove all pci cards, and driver sweep all drivers off and reinstall

In the meantime, Asus have replied saying it sounds like a hardware problem and I should RMA...

That's what I figured as well. Just strange that 2 cards (actually 3) would have the same problem. Probably best to take it to Asus SA directly, not Esquire, in case they have a whole batch of defective cards.

Costing me more driving backwards and forwards to midrand than the bloody card cost :(

i got the xonar dg for R200 excl vat from esquire during their birthday special. using it to power my z5500 via analogue... awesome

Isn't the Z5500 a digital system? In that case you wasted your money since you'll have no benefit from the Xonar. Apart from the headphone amp that is.

Asus have come back again suggesting a motherboard bios update.

I don't see how this can help though?
