sound recommendations *no pun intended*

hey ppl. I wanted to get decent surround sound for my growing home theatre. I was thinking about one of those 5.1 or 6.1 rigs with an amplifier. (not one of those 'dvd player included' packages but a full out sound setup) any do&donts and recommendations?? approx prices will be appreciated (i was thinkin around 4k)

These guys are awesome and pricing is about R 2795 ex vat from Rectron (or shop around) but thats my home theater setup and I've never looked back

looks pretty good. does it have a built in amp and hows it sound when playin mp3s (apart from movies)?? good enough to throw a house party with??

If it's the Z5500 ure referring to then buy them - they're amazing speakers - use an optical link for the audio - it makes a huge difference

Yeah, it does have a built in amp and you can plug anything into it and crank it up.

The suggestions so far w.r.t. surround systems are good, but: Surround systems aren't designed for house parties because the small sat speakers distort fairly easily when pumped up. Even worse, most ppl don't hear it when the speaker is suffering so someone always cranks it up to far at parties.

I know quite a few ppl who picked up a set of old speakers for parties etc. Also makes a solid impression when the speakers are big enough that it takes 2 ppl to carry one.

do&donts and recommendations??

Put the amp on a plug with surge protection, but not a UPS. Make sure you have a way to mount/place the speakers symmetrically....if you've got a sensitive ear then you will hear it if its not set up symmetrically.

Not so sure about the 6.1 thing....afaik DVD output is 5.1. Probably won't make much of a difference since you can split the center channel, but I'd still go with a good 5.1 over a 6.1

Look you can get a nice pair of B&W speakers with a Yamaha amp, but good luck finding the speakers alone for R4K, the logitech's are good all rounders imho, but you are right, it won't run a disco....
