So glad I'm not an audiophile, I just put any headphones into my on-board sound, I play my games and get on with my life.

For me, it was all about hearing the difference.

Back in the day with IDE 80GB hdd's, I would actually reduce all my mp3 to 128Kbps.
But then, I heard the difference between 160, 192, 256 and 320 thru my awesome MPIO mp3 player I got in 2004.

Then one day somebody with a recording studio "showed" me the difference between MP3 and FLAC with his awesome Adam reference monitors, and since then I've never wanted to go back.

Does anybody know anything about RME Audio? Do they have a unit that would work with IEM's?

They are well known and considered some of the best soundcards you can get. Good luck with the price though.

What is the impedance of your headphones/earphones?

Have a look at the Focusright Scarlett 2i2 or even the Asus Xonar Essence STX II (not readily available yet).

The kind of sound card that you want to get depends on the kind of quality/effect you want to get out of it - like a flat studio frequency response or a more pleasant consumer kind of sound?
