Good news about e-visas in South Africa

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schrieber has announced that South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system will go live for visa applications shorter than 90 days at airports by the end of September.

"Over time, we will expand the ETA so that every type of visa application is processed only through this AI-based system to eliminate fraud and inefficiency — forever," he said.
 
Not much has really changed, still waiting for my smart ID 6 months in, the incompetence kills any hype they may claim to have.

Please elaborate on your "smart ID" - what is so particularly "smart" about it?

Currently I doubt there is anything particularly smart about it, or anything the government does to be honest. The future iterations however, will get better and better technologically though. The idea is for it to eventually have it's own chip and become a data of information on you. China has reached the point where the ID can do everything from disarm your house alarm to starting your car as well as holding your medical records, tax information movement records, act as a bank card and anything else the government cares to add. We are nowhere near there, but it is coming.

Me: I certainly do qualify, who can I speak to to sort this out?

Not fiction, similar already happening when calling some corporates.

The card comes with an RFID but I have never found a place or a bank that uses it. I am not even sure if the RFID contains any info.

You do realise these visas are for entry into South Africa and not other countries, right?
 
A lot of good news for making it easier for foreigners to come here Visa free, but not soo muxh good news for us paying through our neck to visit some countries abroad.

I wish he could tackle VISA free or something similar for South African passport holders.
