I was thinking that its quite hard to get South African content sometimes in our apps. For example when reading the news we don't always only want to hear about what is happening in Afghanistan, or how how some sweet Granny in the UK has gone to the shop that we get from NY Times, BBC, CNN, etc. Flipboard, News Republic are all amazing ways to read the news, but the content isn't from a local perspective. Which is why we all have News24 on our phones.

Anyway, so i'm trying to see what I can find that is out there and in the News space I was pleasantly surprised. I found quite a few new News Apps out there and I've tried to review them on my blog.
Basically the list is: (the link will take you to the play store)
News24
BDLive
eNCA
and EWN

While I still love News24 for it's news that is always up to date, I find the interface often frustrating. My favourite app and the conclusion of the review was that the EWN (Eye Witness News) app was the best. Simply because I could continue browsing stories right from where I left off.

If anyone else has any great South Afircan content apps I would love to know!

Thanks Ndanileka!
A few people have also mentioned to me that Google Newstand offers some great local content. it seems to offer content from quite a few different sources including News24. Quite a nice option!

I have used the tax calculator myself, can be quite useful when you want to quickly calculate your salary at your new job. I can imagine that there are some out there who would need it often.

I will certainly try out SA Fuel! What do you get from it?

I have had a look at the app stores from our physical shops and was pleasantly surprised to find quite a few out there. In fact I probably missed some!

PnP is where I started
Then there is Checkers who says I can save a lot of money through their app.
Woolworths which is not really a shopping companion, unless you need to know how much credit you still have left!
and finally Edgars, which I was actually a little impressed with.

I really think that we can create better apps that are more relevant to South Africans with content that helps us in our daily lives, instead of always being concerned with what is happening elsewhere in the world.
To do this I want to challenge those that are building apps in the country to come up with apps that hold the great content to give us full functionality that many international apps provide.

Anyway, to view screenshots of the apps and their functionality you can go here. Please let me know if you have any other favourite SA Apps. Anyone use any of the online shopping apps such as Takealot or Bid or Buy?
