Death by half a million cuts — South Africans kiss DStv goodbye

MultiChoice lost nearly half a million DStv subscribers in South Africa in the past year, according to the company's latest interim results (1H FY2023).

As of the end of September 2023, the pay-TV broadcaster's 90-day active subscribers in its country of origin stood at 8.629 million.

It would be nice to see a correlation graph between broadband penetration and broadcast/satelitte TV viewers.

I don't think initiatives like Vuma Key will so Dstv favours.

Well I'm actually impressed that they have any subscribers left at all. Who still has DStv in the age of cheap widely available broadband. No one I know, that's for sure.

Multichoice wont listen or shareholders refuse to let board do what needs to be done.

Canal+ probably walking up to make a purchase.

I've said it before, simply make premium less expensive and more people will take up the service.
Peeps dont have +- R900-R1000 a month to spend to watch some soccer, cricket or rugby.
Or perhaps I am being far too simple.
Or unbundle it.

Money is tight. People can't afford extras like this anymore.
The irony is that those ditching it can afford the extras and things like fibre. Know one family that earns probably in excess of R30k before tax yet they have +R1k fibre and numerous other services but even basic Dstv is "too much" for them.

The hierarchy is:

Fibre before kids before Dstv.

P. S. Anything after fibre in the above is financially reckless.
