Cloud explosion in South Africa

South Africa has seen a rush of major players entering the country's cloud computing space in recent years.

Companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Huawei, and Google have all launched cloud regions in the country.

So Google not actually here yet? Right?

Just announced that they will be in the future?

Was just looking at the Google app engine and didn't see a SA offering there.

Yup, Google only announced. The sentence below is just plain wrong:

... Google have all launched cloud regions in the country.

Cloud is great and all but the latency between us and the main resource groups on the planet if you're working for international clients have become a nightmare for me, at least on the Azure European servers we're using.

Using a client-server MDM development application that runs tons of SQL between us and Europe has become a real pain in the butt for me. Down from something like 6000+ transactions per second to +-7, due to the turnaround query latency... and there's not much you can do about that unless you make the planet out of wool and wash it in warm water so it can shrink.

So it's not all sunshine and roses from the arse end of Africa, I can tell you that.

I setup my own cloud server. I tried Nextcloud for a while, but it offered much more than I needed. But I've been using Seafile for about 2-3 years with no issues.
