Hi All;

My father lives out in the Northern Cape next to the Orange river about 100 kms from Pofadder. Basically in middle of nowhere. The only way to get a telephone line or internet is via Satellite telephone.

Telkom offers the Spacestream Home product where you pay about R7k for the equipment and then a monthly fee of around R500, which includes 1 Gig of data.

This sounds ok, but the only problem is that he has no mains supply.

I'm an electrical engineer, so can easily setup a solar solution to power the equipment and this is exactly what I intend on doing. I thus need an idea of the power requirements. I do not find technical info on the web and the last person I spoke said that it requires 200W, which seems quite substantial. This person was not technical though and sounded like she did not know watts from volts from amps, so I do not trust what she said.

Does anyone have any idea of the power requirements of this Telkom product? Even better if you setup a solar solution for this yourself and can give me an idea of the power consumption.

Thanks in advance.

@sahopeful, I can help you wrt the solar system. I'm also in Kuilsrivier, so you welcome to come and visit.

My FIL was farming close to "Put Sonder Water". They put up a huge mast for better cell reception.

From the FAQ it says it can run off 12vdc so I highly doubt its 200 watt.

SSO can operate off either SABS standard 240V AC or 12 V DC. In cases of unreliable or “dirty” AC power Telkom suggests that you make use of an uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
