Hi

I am unable to sent outgoing mail, I get an error message from Outlook that links to SpamCop and the IP 196.207.32.235.

I ran the IP through a DNS seach and the IP seems to be Vodacom.

Nameserver dns2-vop.3g.vodacom.co.za. reports: No such host 235.32.207.196.in-addr.arpa.

I presume it will get delisted soon ? Thanks

What is the solution to this ? I don't send spam ( I send /rec 40 emails a day on average) and from what I gather it's one of Vodacoms IPs that's blacklisted even though it goes through my mail server.

I need email. Its crucial to my business. Any thoughts anyone ??

Thanks

@PCW were you using smtp.vodacom.co.za or your own smtp server?
IMO 196.207.32.235 was the IP address dynamically allocated to your connection when you connected, otherwise known as a Dynamic IP address, and interpreted by anti-spam listing services like Spamcop, as being part of a 'dialup IP address range', and as a result an automatic source of spam emails, in order to prevent spambots from sending spam emails directly from PCs without going through an ISP's smtp server.

My point is that one should not try [read shouldn't bother] to run one's own smtp server using a Dynamic IP address, simply bcos whole ranges of Dynamic IP addresses are spam-block listed to prevent spambots from using these IP addresses.

There are at least 3 possible solutions to this:
  1. Use smtp.vodacom.co.za - unfortunately this was unavailable at the time as reported by fellow forumites, cause unknown and appears to have been sorted out after lengthly unavailability - not good.
  2. Use another mail server to send emails, my preference is GMail via a browser, and you can setup GMail to customise the From address, IMO suitable for business emails.
  3. Vodacom needs to provide the option of a nominal monthly static IP address rental, for customers that want to run their own smtp server on a 3G|HSDPA connection. Do customers using a custom APN not get one or more static IP addresses? - if so, then the only stumbling block is how much does a custom APN cost per month.

That IP should be part of the internetvpn APN range, but I'm surprised you get the same IP everytime.

Can you do the following:

1) do an "ipconfig /all" and log the results.

2) disconect and re-connect.

3) do an "ipconfig /all" and log the results.

4) Post the results.

I get different IPs when doing above but when sending email it's the same IP.
I've switched to smtp.vodacom.co.za now which has solved the problem. Thanks for the advice. I'll probably get delisted soon as be back on my own server.

I'm a bit lost, don't understand your setup yet. :)

If you use your own smtp server, I would assume it will be on the dynamically assigned IP from the network.

Is the data card in the machine running the smtp service or do you route to it?

<edit>

OK, it makes more sense now.

196.207.32.235 is one of the NAT IPs assigned to the APN. Was recently added to the NAT pool, and I was not aware of the change.

This is why you see it all the time and is also the reason it is blacklisted as many spammers will be using this IP by default.

Again, the only solution is to use the relay provided.
