A Virginia judge sentenced a spammer to nine years in prison Friday in the nation's first felony prosecution for sending junk e-mail, though the sentence was postponed while the case is appealed.

A jury had recommended the nine-year prison term after convicting Jeremy Jaynes of pumping out at least 10 million e-mails a day with the help of 16 high-speed lines, the kind of Internet capacity a 1,000-employee company would need.

His net worth is about 5 million USD ... all from his spamming activities.
 
And that from only 10% of the spam messages drawing a reply and action.


Throw away the key I say! Had enough of SPAM!
 
Can you elaborate?

I have to admit that spam isn't an issue for me - Googles anit-spam filter works very well
so i have to think that 9 years is harsh - but then i think of all the wated bandwith and deside he should have thought about the sentence before the act
 
Did you see the actual figures as found on The Register ? 16 broadband lines sent out 10,000,000 emails per day netting 1 sale for every 30,000. $50,000 in montly costs brought in between $400,000 and $700,000 per month.

Interesting thing is if he hadn't hidden his identity he wouldn't have been committing a crime - at least not in the state of Virginia where he was convicted.

The way I look at spam is this - wasted bandwidth on the recipient's side, it increases costs just receiving something you never asked for, so, not only has the dude made pots of money from very few people that are actually dumb enuf to respond, but he has also stolen money out of the pockets of people that were clever enough not to respond/block... Then there's also the issue of overloading mail servers & blocking legitimate email, which certainly can have a financial impact as well...

9 years, I say add another 9 years for good measure!
