always one of the most expensive retailers in SA...
Depends. I find our (super) spar to be pretty reasonable for the food we eat. It's also a very nice spar and well stocked. Also stock goods from local suppliers.

Milk 2L R28/29
Buttter R55/R60
Chicken R60/kg

That's about it. Lol

The rest we buy at the butcher, small farmers, local stores.

We getting a Checkers just down the road from Spar closer to end of the year. Not good for Spar. Wonder what impact it is going to have on them.

I must say, the developers and management of the site must be very good as they barely have any impact on traffic and the site is always clean and well maintained while building.

I feel sorry for their neighbours who won't have a view any more.

We also got a McDonald's now. Saw the sign peeking past the trees. But I have standards. It's for those beneath me. :p

But I'm sure all of this have an impact on Spar.

Jissis, I last saw milk prices like that in 2023. Our Spar is R37 for cheapest 2l milk. Even the other shops in my town is almost R40

Milk is too expensive these days... A teaspoon of Cremora will make the coffee sort of white but the taste is not the same. We have to use what we can afford these days.

Sies man. Ricoffy is not coffee.
My wife drinks coffee. I don't at all. She likes it with a spoon of cremora and still a splash of milk. Yes, her preference is Ricoffy.

Coffee's taste makes me sick. Most hot drinks does too, though.

The one by us burned down, was rebuilt and was great for quite a while, then they started trying to replace their own in house stuff (burgers, toasties etc) with some spar brand version at 3 to 4x the price. This did not work so instead they kept those on the shelf and just made their own in-house stuff price increase incrementally.

They also started selling really crappy "sushi/sashimi"

Anyway, the price increases and less specials as well as more customers drove me out slowly but surely.

I now basically go there for vuse if I run out or bread and milk if on special.

I rather drive an extra 20 minutes or change my drive home in the evenings to go to pnp or shoprite.
