Good day all.

I'm looking for a place where I can get/code a spare car key.
My car mechanic advised me that I will need to go to the Land Rover agent, since they are the only one who can code the microchip in the car key and get the car to work (he said that while the usual keysmiths would be able to copy the key, it will cause the car to stop shortly after it starts).

Is this true? Which reliable source can I go to get a spare key coded (other than the agent), since I would prefer not to pay 5k for a key?

This is for a Freelander 2, Land Rover and I stay in Cape Town.

Your input would be much appreciated!

Is it the little fob thingy?

You will only get that from Land Rover. The key is not the issue, it's the chip in the fob.

What happened to your spare key? Do you want a 3rd one or did you lose/damage your spare?

If the latter, check your insurance. Mine covers it up to R5k.

Don't buy one from Ebay, if it was already coded it can't be coded again. Yeah I know, I still have bite the bullet to get one from LR. Bought the Freelander without a spare.

Try this supplier in the UK - they stock parts for most Land Rover / Range Rover / Freelander models (and a host of other British cars like MG, Rover, Triumph, etc) - maybe you can source a replacement key from them for less than what is would cost you in SA - even taking into account the dismal exchange rate.

Pitbull, yes it is the fob one, if you're talking about the car key with the remote control kind of thing? I guess that's what my mechanic has tried to tell me as well when he told me I can only go the Land Rover agent to get this sorted...

MightyQuin, I recently bought the car second hand and the previous owner has lost the spare key and the original one is malfunctioning as well... I haven't got insurance sorted out yet - may I ask which insurance you are with?

ghostim, so I have no other options but to go the the Agent? Just what I was scared to hear.

Ivan Leon, thanks I will definitely check it out!

In the case where you bought the vehicle without a spare insurance will not cover it.
Another interesting thing is that you need proof of ownership and proof of residence before LR will sell and code the fob.

Nonsense. It's a standard part of the policy and how would they know you bought it without a spare in the first place?

Why is this "interesting" ? It seem logical and the absolute minimum requirement.

What do you mean when you say the spare is "malfunctioning"?

I'm directly with Santam.

That would be immoral. Insurance is meant to cover risk. No key delivered is not in the insured risk definition. The community (your fellow policyholders) pay into a pool to cover a loss based on a defined and disclosed risk profile. You are proposing an insurance fraud. Your suggestion requires 1. A lie, 2. Obtaining a value to which you are not entitled, 3. Taking money unjustly from your fellow policyholders. It is utterly unacceptable.

It's these sorts of frauds multiplied by ten thousand times a day that drive up premiums and distort the whole thing. You're ruining it for everyone.

Triggered...lol.

Your self-righteous indignation, although quite amusing, is also way OTT.

These are "risks" that are included by default, not requested and specified. There are an amazing amount of coverage on your policy that you pay for, but never requested OR ever claim against. Short term insurance may be the biggest scam ever and currently perpetrated against consumers.

Oh, wait, before I forget...I still need to claim my hole-in-one from yesterday as well as my domestic's 65" flatscreen that got stolen out of the Wendy House during Saturday evening....

Thanks for the sponsorship, Arthur :crylaugh:

Just give these lock smith a call. they might have what you need 012 377 1237

I'd rather donate R1000 towards the OP's new key than have him lie to the insurance company. Integrity is worth more than money.

I'm guessing you've never been ripped off by insurance companies.

Spoke to LR Centurion.
Replacement keyfob = R2500 + hour labour for programming.
If the vehicle does not accept the new keyfob:
A module in the vehicle need to replaced (R6500) + 2 x keyfobs (R5000)

I only have 1 key, and the fob itself is worse for wear. I'm planning on importing the fob casing only. But I too need to get a second key. Those prices are scary as fark...

Hi keyboy7
I also own an FL2 and need to get a new set of keys - how are the ones you got from electromechauto holding up after 1.5 years?
