This will sound like a stupid question, but I have to ask.

I am trading in my car, but I don't have a spare key. My key has a remote and all that. Is the spare key supposed to be the same as your "main" key?

A friend of mine bought a Panda (I think), but he said his spare key doesn't have a remote.
Basically he can only use that spare key to open them doors and all that, but I'm not sure if he can start the car.

Yes, you supposed to have one. All cars are sold with a spare key.

Bollocks, I bought a 2nd hand car from F1 Autos for my girlfriend and it only came with 1 key even after I questioned the fact.

New cars get sold with 2, 2nd hand cars don't have to have a spare key.

the second key not having a remote etc is because normally it isnt a spare key, it is a valet key.

when you leave your car to get cleaned etc...

So you reckon I can convince them to take my car without a spare key? I don't want to spend R2k or so.

Should be able to, it's up to the agreement between buyer and seller. It's certainly not law to have a 2nd key.

I would tell the person you're selling the car to that the price takes the lack of spare key into consideration.

Also bare in mind that some insurance companies require you to present the main and spare key if the car is stolen to prove you weren't negligent.

The spare key would be a nice to have when getting a 2nd hand car, but 95% of the time its just not forthcoming since the previous owner has lost it or forgotten about it

If you don't have a spare, make sure your insurance knows about it. They usually demand all keys in the event of a theft and may not pay out if you can't produce it.

My mom has a new Toyota Avanza and it came with two keys. Each key also has its own remote.

But I know some cars only have one remote with the spare key without a remote.

But this thing where second hand cars are sold with only one key is rubbish. All cars new or second hand must have both keys or otherwise I would say thanks but f-off.

Point is that car was new so where is the spare key then? So you must go out again and pay for a key to be made when the original should be there.

Not try to sound paranoid but just for interest sake if the dealer says the second key is "lost" or there isn't one for what ever reason how can you be sure his telling the truth? A dodge dealer can use that "lost" key and tell his buddies to go rob your car or something. That probably sounds stupid but the bottom line is if you buy a proper second hand car you should get everything with it. Keys, manuals etc.
