The reporting in the video below is not wholly accurate. Please read our official statement below

As all are aware, the Uitenhage SPCA is in dire financial straits following continued non-payment from the Metro for services rendered. This was highlighted again in the media last night. We are incredibly grateful to all our supporters – the public and local business – for their support which has helped keep our doors open since July 2018. Our doors are currently STILL open and will REMAIN open if payment is received as promised by Friday 14th December 2018.

We would like to clarify the current status of the SPCA :
- Monthly running costs are on average R150k
- We have not been paid since June 2018
- 165k owed by Metro for June and July 2018
- Despite the pound closing to the Municipal Dog Control unit on 06/09 we have still taken in stray animals in at no cost. We accept strays from the public and collect them ourselves still.
- Unlike some other welfare organizations, the SPCA mandate does not allow us to turn animals away and we need to assist animals in need/distress at all times.

They just sink lower.
When you think its the bottom they show you they are capable of being even worse.

Please note. We have been advised by the Metro that as no contract exists between us and them, we are not recognized as a service provider. This means that currently the metro pound is non operational. Public Health (metro) has a mandate to have an operational pound. Collection of strays, diseased animals, vicious animals posing risk to members of the public are all the responsibility of the metro, NOT THE SPCA.

Members of the public must contact the Metro with regard to the above and if referred to the SPCA, must inform the metro they need to action. It is not the fault of the SPCA that there is no operational metro pound or our responsibility.

We have tried our best to assist since September 2018, but as we have been told there will be no compensation financially, we can no longer do the Metros job for them. The cost incurred by the SPCA thus far is in the region of R200k- which is money now lost. In the interim, Metro employees are being paid, yet not carrying out all their duties.

Please click here to see the list of duties the metro is responsible for.
