Speaker cable - Van den Hull or WireWorld

Ahhh ok then you aren't THAT mad... :p

Thanks, I think ;)

The unwritten rule back in the day was 10% of your hifi value (being amp, CD player and speakers). I couldn't bring myself do that high at all ... but about 2%-3% didn't bug me. As I say, after spending a reasonable sum on the equipment I found it difficult to save a few hundred on cables.

I have a question though ; if there is a difference in the car - regardless of what caused it - why is it impossible that the OP would hear no difference at all in a certain listening room? I'd never heard of the second set of speakers, but I read up on them and they're definatley high end and critcal

We don't know his listening room - maybe it's one of those smallish, air conditioned, sound resistant rooms with a zero ambient sound. In that case, would be silly to say he'd pick up zero difference between R20.00 cables and R2,000.00 cables?

I'd say he may hear a difference - but the difference vs the cost doesn't give the value

Yes.

Very interesting.

In the DSTV section they were discussing how amplifiers make no difference either .... and CD players ... and now cables. So what makes the difference? Everything seems to be excluded :/

Is it only the speakers?

So anyone can buy any combination of CDP, amp, DAC, cables - but only the last portion (speaker) makes any difference?
Is it the sum of their parts?
Is the differenc on each so small, that they add up?
What is neutral listening anyway? The author points out there are differences, caused by ohmage etc - so the difference I hear could be different rather than an improvement? And it's me (subjective) that decides what I feel about the difference and whether I perceive it as a difference?

Amplifiers make no difference? Really?

I have 2 amplifiers at home, 1 bog standard LG P.O.S. and a Marantz.. and the Marantz just has a much warmer and better sound all around.

I didn't say that ...

I've also had numerous amplifiers and I know differences exist. Same with CD players, albeit the difference is smaller. However some say niether an amplifier nor a CD player make any difference.

Ok, in that case I'm def on your side :)

In a purely digital world with no postprocessing, then yes these things make no difference.. but we live in an analog world so there has to be post processing and conversion, and that makes a massive difference when its done with good components

Got that one going. Please everybody, this is not a battle between Flex and Monster cables. Sorry to say, "Size does matter". It's about the ability of the cable used to carry the current needed to drive the loudspeakers with minimal loss. Nobody should use the Twinflex, usually 0.5 sqMM copper for any serious performance use. However any, I mean any, copper cable of sufficient diameter copper will be correct to use.
Same for other electrical uses, take twinplex and extend your 2KW heater and it'll have to carry 10 amps for which it's not designed. It may even burn up. It's all about resistance in the circuit. Use 1.5 to 2.5 mm or more and you'll have the best there is, probably better than some of those the Specialists will try to sell you. By all means use Hull or whoever but make sure of the actual copper diameter or cross section before you buy. Interestingly Silver is the best conductor known, even better then Gold, if you could get (afford) silver cable it would only have to be tiny in diameter because of its low resistance.
By the way resistance is directly proportional to the length of the cable used, so if you only a 1 metre run you could use a thin gauge copper but if it's 20 metres go for the big stuff.
