Hello...

This is a project not already in motion but rather a possibility ....a very real one depending on the feedback I'll get.

With that out of the way Greetings.
The back story is the are 2 laptops that need to be refurbished (not mine) and the reason for wanting this is to upgrade their speed as they're very slow.

The changes I was looking to make are:
1. Upgrade its memory to the max capability of the machine.
2. Upgrade the CPU to a decent level with a compatible processor

Now what I would like to know is:
i)What is the next best processor I should look to upgrade each system with that will be compatible and effective
ii)Maximum ram capacity the system will be able to use
iii)If the changes will be effective enough to have a speed boost worthy of taking on the task
iv)Then when charging for this service how much would a fair rate be ?

Specs for the machine

Machine 1:
Asus X554L........ which currently I can't even turn on but looking to troubleshoot and fix the problem once I get a universal charger.

Machine 2:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Professional
Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Other OS Description Not Available
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer Acer
System Model Aspire E1-531
System Type x64-based PC
Processor Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1005M @ 1.90GHz, 1900 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date Insyde Corp. V2.15, 3/11/2013
SMBIOS Version 2.7
Windows Directory C:\Windows
System Directory C:\Windows\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.1.7601.24545"

Make very sure that the processor can even be upgraded.. excellent chance that they cannot be upgraded, because they are mostly soldered directly on to the boards these days..

The simplest way: Upgrade to max supported RAM and change OS to SSD with a fresh install, with no bloatware from manufacturer..

You cannot upgrade the CPU like with a desktop MB.

A Celeron 1.9Ghz is a glorified calculator, but I guess it depends what these laptops are/will be used for.

You can max the RAM and put in a SSD...that's about all. I think it will be a waste of time....

You will not be able to upgrade the CPUs, that is the norm with most laptops.

Both of them came out standard with mechanical hard drives. If these are still in place then an SSD replacement will be your best option for speeding them up.

The RAM in the Acer can be upgraded, while that in the Asus can not. This would be the second thing to look at after the HDD.

The best way to speed up an old laptop is to install a light weight Linux distribution if you can live with this. Windows 7 is already past it's sell by date.

Buy a new laptop. Try second hand on carbonite

The CPUs in those two systems are not upgradeable, they are soldered to the board.

First things first thank you all for your responses so far and forgive me for my delay in responding work is pretty hectic at the moment hindering me from making timeous replies.

With that said @WAslayer @MightyQuin @ponder as @garyc says it would seem its actually possible to change the CPU for the Acer, the ASUS for now only a possibility exists as I know someone who claims to have changed his processor from a model similar to the one I have without needing to solder anything, what I can confirm is that it's possible to change the ram for the ASUS and its very straight forward.

I'll give confirmation hopefully by the weekend considering my time constraints and the fact that I hate how these laptops disassemble, it's always a pain to assemble laptops from this day and age.

Then @Virex and @garyc another OS is not an option in this case as these will be used in an office environment with a third party software used to scan, upload and connect with a 5g router.

Finally, at @Pixies,@garyc,@MightyQuin, and @WAslayer I agree fully changing the HDDs to SSDs is also another big option for attaining a s

I would NEVER take that risk tbh...but you do you.

After a glance, I have to admit that it seems interesting, ill give feedback once I've had a proper read

I think you read wrong. Go look at teardown videos for those two models and you'll see they are soldered.

After checking out the site I have to say it looks interesting, I might go back for myself, I have to ask though have you or anyone you know bought from the site? and was it a good purchase?

Side note purchasing laptops for this person is out of the question. If it comes to that they will buy new laptops for themselves

Possible .let me check out the vids then I'll get back to you

have a read and it should reveal all.

Update read the manual very informative and touches on how to upgrade the ram but doesn't touch on anything regarding the CPU

Unfortunatly buyig another laptop is not an option in this case ,I have to admeet though that the site seems interesting the only question I have is would you recommend buying a laptop the than from a shop or site that has refurbished the item ?
