speed bumps, what is the REAL reason ?

You drive through residential areas and to keep the speed limit at 60, they make you slow down to about 20 or 30. Aren't speed bumps supposed to 'keep' you at 60 rather than make you waste your brakes and shock absorbers.
And what does pressing brakes do ? It wastes the energy and momentum that you've built up. So ? You have to use more petrol to get to a comfortable speed, and petrol taxes is one of the best incomes for the government.

Is there more to it than just slowing us down for safety's sake?

They're there to stop the boy-racers from driving like the dicks that they are. Those idiots will do 120km/hr on a straight residential road if not for the bumps. The normal drivers suffer for it.

If I where you I would just get an couple of like minded individuals in your street and install them yourselves. You could get a company that tars driveways ect to install them.
Its always easier to apologize than get permission.

I am with Mr.C here. I don't see any benefit of speed bumps in residential areas....

They should be mandatory all around schools and churches/mosques, etc/shopping centers. If you want a speed bump, rather place it before a stop sign or a yield sign.

After a few years, these bumps will be removed becomes they lead to greater energy consumption.

I cross a busy street on my bike everyday. It is a pedestrian crossing, NO-ONE stops or slows down to check if there is anyone wanting to cross. They rather put voet-inni-hoek to make the traffic lights at the end of the road. The speed bumps should be there, but it is not.....total rediculous....

I see not use of them in other areas....

I have been doing a lot of work in the 'black" cities around Joburg and Pretoria recently and there are speed humps on 99% of the Zebra crossings - so just because they are not in your particular area, doesn't mean that they are not around.

Anyone driving on the N11 through Mpumalanga had better beware as well, as they have MASSIVE speed humps that are placed about 200m apart before EVERY Stop/Go section where they are rebuilding the roads. These humps are simply marked with a hump sign next to the actual hump and I have watched several guys have to lock up brakes in a big way and then still hammer their front bumpers on these humps, and what it does to the suspension is another matter. I honestly think that the authorities have done a total overkill on those particular humps, and they seem to be confined to the Mpumalanga road works, but in any of the rural provinces, you enter a black community area at speed at your own risk as you will meet up with these massive humps. Another scary area for unmarked L A R G E humps is between Loskop dam and Elandsdoorn...hit those at speed and you will write your car off.

@the graduate - I'm sorry I cannot agree with you. A Residential area is PRECISELY where we need the humps for all the reasons I stated in my previous post...from speeding taxis to cowboys - and yes, my neighbour with 2 small kids who have both had narrow squeaks walking on the pavement, and myself are making a plan to simply put them up in our road.

The correct thing to do is to deploy systems that penalise those that break the law, like permanent camera's and working traffic officers combined with instant-courts and an efficient asset forfeiture unit.

If a single car fails to behave at a pedestrian crossing, a simple call to the local political representative for that area should result in the immediate deployment of a traffic official to handle the complaint, said official will then be on the lookout for the vehicle, and will purposefully stop that vehicle and have warning words with the driver.

But, for some reason, expecting civil servants to do their jobs is taboo.

I would rather have living kids playing in my garden, than visiting their graves, because of some SOB who couldn't give a damn about speed limits. If I have to "suffer" as a result, then so be it.

Road near my dad's house had about 3 accidents a week. They put speed bumps in now you hear about an accident every 4 to 6 months.

Wish they would make them mandatory (along with barriers to stop the morons driving around them) on all residential roads every 500 meters.

Not if it's a normal town road. If they are then going to try and speed between humps, then they are simply underlining what bloody Cretins they are.

If you are within the speed limit, you should not have to brake hard or speed up, at all...most humps can be taken gently at about 30 km/h...calms everyone down...

As for the RPG....bring it on! GREAT IDEA!!

I wish they weren't as inconsistent. I know some where even 10kmh feels nasty while others @40kmh is fine.

Except for the fact that the speed limit is often 60km/h and sometimes higher, but is hardly ever 30km/h.

Sorry, no, my point is that if you are doing 60 in a 60 zone, 99% of the time you are actually going too fast for the surrounding area. If you keep to around 40, you won't be wasting time, and will have to do very little braking for a reasonable hump. It's the monsters on the N11 that scare me!
