i have a netgear dg834gt router and recently when i connect the icon shows a 54MBPS connection . after a few minutes the speed shows 1.0MBPS and i can't open any sites. If i click on "repair" it shows a 54MBPS connection again and i can access websites for a few minutes. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Has transferring files on your lan been affected?

i don't transfer any files as i only have 1 laptop that uses the router.

Is the signal strength constant?

It could be something as simple as someone using a microwave.

once it drops to 1.0MBPS it remains contstant. the drop in speed occurs without any interference that I know of (microwave,TV etc)

Are you initiating the pppoe connection from your router or from your laptop? IOW is your router in bridged mode? You could try switching it around and see if that helps.

lol that went WAY over my head. all i know is that i set up my router with default settings and just put on my laptop daily. the only brdige i know is over the river Kwai.

now reply in Standard Grade language please.:D

distance from the access point.......best guess?
any interference....walls, mobile, microwave etc?
wireless a/b/g - access point mix mode, which channel, wireless card driver old/latest ver~.?
speed drop specific time of day or always?

Motion seconded,
Distance from the AP and possible interference.Experiment by moving closer until right next to AP and watch for signal quality increase.
I concur, do you concur? (hehe)
