I've been using my MTN 3G card in Suse 9.3 and in windows XP and the speed in Suse is not as fast as in XP. Most of the time I have only GPRS connection anyway, but even that is faster in XP. In Xp I get average download at about 25kb/s and the max goes up to about 80kb/s.
In Suse I struggle to get 8kb/s. Does anybody have a suggestion how to fix this? I use the Novatel U630 PCMCIA card. Maybe different initialization strings for the card.

Thanks, KMA

Hi,
There are at commands to specify whether you would like to connect gprs only, umts only, prefer umts, etc. Perhapsspecify prefer umts. Here are some useful articles with useful howto's

Notably:

There is a very useful command that changes the way the V3G card behaves:

AT_OPSYS=n

Where n is a value between 0 and 5

AT_OPSYS=0 #Only connect to GSM networks
AT_OPSYS=1 #Only connect to UMTS networks
AT_OPSYS=2 #If you have a choice - GPRS first
AT_OPSYS=3 #If you have a choice – UMTS first
AT_OPSYS=4 #Which ever network you connect to stay with it.
AT_OPSYS=5 #Automatic – let V3G decide

Just for info I am using a Nokia 6230 and Bluetooth and connect to Linux (Suse 9.3/Fedora/Ubuntu) and XP and so far I have not noticed any significant differences in speed beteen the two.:D
I would imagine that drivers and settings could make a big difference to explain the slower speeds being experienced using the PC card through Linux. :confused:

Thanks, guys.
I will try and see what I can do to get the speed up.
