Speed kills 
The Speed your going at when you have an accident has a direct impact on whether you survive or not. Simple test for it is driving a car into a wall at 20 km then trying it at a 120km

The law of physics
If you where to take 2 objects and fling them at each other, same weight same speed you'll get a dead stop at the spot of the collision.
If 1 is moving at a quicker speed then the other it will still move forward thru the collision. Things light weight also come in to play. That being said.
A Tazz hitting a truck head on there will be no survivors in the Tazz at any speed. How ever if a Tazz was to hit a Tazz head on the fastest car will have a less likely case of death then the 1 traveling at a slower speed.
The reason speed limits are there is to maximize your reaction time in the event of an accident. However some accidents can't be avoided and you would want to be in the heavier and faster traveling car

easy test. Hit a plank with your fist at half strengh.... You'll prob bust your hand. Hit it at full speed: Your fist will go thru the plank and your hand will have no pain at all

Why can't people keep to the speed limit ?
Speed definitely kills. High speeds result in high impact collisions. High impact collisions are more likely to be fatal.
Highway speed limit can be raised but the 60Km/h zones should remain as they are. In SA the biggest hazard on the roads are pedestrians.

Reaction time. If a car driving infront of you has a blow out, you'll have time to react. If the other car was driving 200 and you doing the same:
1. The reaction time will be to slow to avoid collision.
2. The other car at that speed will prob. be flung accross all lanes.
That is also the reason for the following distance rule.

The plank gets distroyed though. In this case driving fast is worse for other cars but yours. What would happen then if we all drove faster heavier vehicles and had a collision ?

I personally prefer being in the car that keeps me alive.
During that collision i have only 2 thing to protect, me and my passengers.
It sounds really bad but it's a kill or be killed situation. Fact are there.
This is the law of physics
If we all drive trucks at 60 km/h weighing the same about and had head on collisions the sad fact is that none of the parties would survive such a crash.

If there was a general culture of good driving, then would could start by experimenting by increasing speed limits here and there.

I agree fully.
Currently the problem on the roads is all but the speeds.
Drivers, un-roadworthy cars, incompetence, lack of distance perception... and and and.
I really know how to drive, the thing that taught me how to really be on the look out and "drive" for other drivers as well... Motorbike.
If you have been riding a motorbike you’ll know exactly what I'm talking about, when driving on a highway I have already summarized the possibilities of the next 3 cars driving in front of me and what they might do or not do. If something was to happen in front of me do I have and escape route. Things like this are second nature on a bike. Since then the same happens in my head by just driving my car to the shop. It's second nature now.

It must be one of Pitbull's favourite pastimes. Now we can call it Pitbull'Ncap.
Make everyone ride a motorcycle for 5 years before they're allowed to get a license for any other type of vehicle. Those that survive will have developed good road skills.
Why can't motorcycles ride in the lane like everybody else...instead of riding alongside other cars?
