Hi all;

Did some searching around and cant seem to find an answer. I recently upgraded to a 4mb line, however, when I do a speed test it maxes out as a 1mb line. Is there something I need to do to get the speed up to 4mb?

If you download from local ftp sites, what speed do you get?

In general, if you grab a file from any site, be it local or international, what speed do you get?

when downloading from the news servers it maxes out at about 105kbps, same with my ubuntu updates

Can you post a result from www.speedtest.net and/or www.speed.io (on the former, make sure to use the closest mirror to you)?

Also, are you able to check the line statistics (in your router/modem) - look for "Line Attenuation" and "Noise Margin" and post them here. Are you synched at the full 4096kbps?

Speedtest.net shows 821kbps down and 428kbps up.

Under my modem status it shows the following:

Us Rate (Kbps) 512
Ds Rate (Kbps) 1056
DS Line Attenuation 51
US Line Attenuation 31

Oh and if it makes any difference I am connecting using a Telkom Mega 100WR as the modem and a Linksys WRT56GL as my router

^^ DS Line Attenuation 51

With that Attenuation (prolly 3km+ from exchange) - you'll be able to get MAYBE 2048 but not a 4096 synch - is going drop non-stop......whats your SNR?

Your attenuation is high which isn't a good thing and you're only syncing at 1Mb.

Seems like you're pretty far from the exchange.

Does your line drop a lot?

my stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 52 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 10 db 12 db

had to downgrade from 4MBps to 2MBps due to the line dropping (was fine for a week after the upgrade to 4MBps, only then started dropping).

It is 100% stable now, albeit at half the speed:(

as you can see, my DS attenuation is like yours, but I get 2meg stable.

any way I could get back to 4MB stable? Would Telkom give a ***?

Ja, the line is pretty up and down. I assume that that the short answer is that 1mbps is about the best I am going to get? Is it worth contacting them to try and sort it out?

you lucky you getting 105kb as i asked for an upgrade to 4mb and my line was disconnected most of the day and when it was sync'd, i only saw 55kb max. I had to ask for a downgrade after 2 days ...

Telkom sucks big time :mad:

75 kilobytes per second, phiber?! Doesn't add up:

75 * 8 = 600kilobits per second;
600 / 0.8 (TCP/IP overhead) = 750kilobits per second synch speed...?

On my 4Mbps down, 512kbps up line, I only get about 53kilobytes per second upload (= 430kilobits per second).

PLEASE HELP!!! :(

I have a 4mb line with Telkom. My internet speed is extremely slow.. :(
My speed-test at www.speedtest.net is 0.30 :( Please help ASAP!!! :(

Actually you should be able to get 4Mbps. There is something else wrong.
