Speed on a 384k line

Hi,

Just wondered what your max download speed is on a 384k line at a time when it is unshaped / unthrottled.

Mine maxes at 41k.

For most it will be around that value. It also depends on your distance from the exchange but it usually around 40KB/s.
Mine has always been 41KB/s max. If you look at the formula: 384k / 8 * 0.85 (85% of the line speed - variation of +- 5%) = 40.8KB/s

However average would be about 80% of line speed with 5% variance either way
So 38.4 but then you get people with good connection that gets 41KB/s and then some with not so good who only gets 35KB/s

MMMIG if you got 46KB/s then your line was probably not synching at 384Kb since that would mean you got 95% plus throughput on your 384Kb line
Overheads to keep the connection up and for data transfer would normally be at least 10% (43.2KB/s)
You were probably getting a sync close to 512Kb at that time

It's known that some users have seen download speeds of 70-100KB/s (Myself included) on a 384K line for a few seconds and then drops down again. Someone once explained to me that this was due to someone else connected to the same exchange and within a fairly close distance from you was downloading the same or similar binary pattern... Don't know how true that is.
 
This morning my "512" line was getting 70-80KB for about 5min. Sigh.
 
Anything above 41KB/s is likely to be a fluctuation in the measuring & not actual speed.

Absolutely agree. But I guess it could be because they say that you are then actually purchasing a 1Mbit line, not a 4MBit line...

Hi, Wouldn't your ISP limit the speed as well?

Actually I only got that speed when Telkom removed all caps for that day.
I also live less than 250m from my exchange.

That's just your software doing miscalculations on speed averages for a specific interval, nothing else.
 
lol ive got 50kb/s once but that was a spike, i usually get from 35 - 45kb/s with my uncapped but i use astraweb and i download from news readers i saw the number on alt.binz
 
Some software use compression on their data packets and then report the data rate of the uncompressed data which is why some users manage to get such high rates.
 
I don't want to open another thread for the same question on a 4MB line...so, here is my scenario:

I am on the uncapped 4MB package, what kind of dl speed can I expect, i.e with torrents?
I am 5 km's away from the exchange, and have currently an average of 30kB/s, sometimes its much higher, had over the weekend up to 100kB/s. Don't have a clue why its so erratic :confused:

Don't want to start a new thread but I have a question.

Is the Telkom line what gives you the speed or your ISP? (yes, I'm a Noob)

So if I have a Telkom ADSL LIne and I have 384 / 3Gb cap does that mean my line speed is max 384 kBs and the amount of ISP internet access I have is 3 Gb?:confused:
