Speed problems on WiFi after 200mb/s upgrade

So I just received the 100>200 speed upgrade. I am using a Zyxel SBG3500-N router and my speed over ethernet to PC is excellent i get the full 200 but on WiFi connected directly to the router i am only getting 100 max. I have also connected one of my Ubiquiti Access Points to one of the Zyxels ethernet ports which seem to go the full 200 but WiFI from that is also 100 max?

Anyway to fix this, what am i missing?

Check the config, but probably the Wi-Fi hardware in the router is limited to 100 Mbps. = You need a new router.

Ok makes sense but what about the speed to the Unifi AP? The unifi AP is connected via the Ethernet which does 200mb/s

Because the Unifi AP is hardwired you will get the full speed - no loss due to a poor Wifi chip. I see the spec on that is 802.11n which theoretically maxes out at 300Mbps - with wifi that equates to about 150Mbps in a pure environment. Noise etc will reduce that throughput

Using the Unifi APs should be the defualt for you - switch off the Zyxle router wifi

I managed to test it again with a dual band router now, a TP Link archer D2, it has dual band. i see i am getting 100 down and 100 up on the 2.4ghz WiFI network and 200 down 100 up on the 5ghz WiFi network.

So i think the problem is im limited to 100 download speed max on the old zyxel router and Unifi AP due to it being only 2.4ghz?

How old is your unifi AP that it only has 2.4Ghz..??
 
Anyway, here are some steps to work through on the unifi and also, you can check from the unifi controller if your unifi has a 5ghz radio or not..

That sounds about correct. I get approximately 100Mbps (download) when connected to the 2.4Ghz WiFi channel, about 500Mbps when connected to the 5Ghz channel and about 700Mbps when connected to a WiFi 6 channel.

Link speeds between phone and router is about 250Mbps on 2.4Ghz channel, 1Gbps on 5Ghz channel and 2.2Gbps on WiFi 6

Edit These are on TP Link Ax50 and TP Link Ac5400 routers

Anyway, an Openserve contact told me when I was experiencing the same issue is that the 2.4Ghz spectrum is so oversaturated with remote toys, car remotes, gate remotes and bluetooth, that if you can run on 5Ghz. If at all possible run your laptop/desktop with 1000Gbit ethernet to your router

Yes the problem is no one bothers to actively manage coverage, limiting spill over etc.

For this to be of such a massive concern, you must be living in an extremely dense residential area..
 
Lol, I Just moved from Rain to 200Mbs fibre line. It feels like a sideways movement in terms on speed, and slightly better ping. I wanted to get a 1Gbit line but Metrofibre maxes out at 200. Unbelievable.

Not really. I live in a leafy suburb where plot sizes are typically between 500m2 and 1000m2, and if I run Wifi Analyzer on my phone I have about 10 different SSIDs on the 2.4Ghz band all overlapping. If I look at the 5Ghz band I can only see 2 other SSIDs, and they're both on completely different non-overlapping channels to me. I've got a 200Mbps fibre connection, and if I run a speedtest while standing next to my access point and connected to the 2.4Ghz band I can barely get about 70Mbps down. On the 5Ghz band I can get my full 200Mbps down easily.

Overcrowding on the 2.4Ghz band is a major problem wherever you are, unless you're on a farm in the middle of the Karoo.

The way in which you're supposed to interpret WiFi speeds is take whatever's on the box and halve it. That's your max rate for upload and download. 150Mbps in either direction.

However, there are compounding issues. The first is that the devices you test with may only be able to use one spatial stream (which for most routers, means one antenna per spatial stream). One spatial stream with 20MHz bandwidth at MCS level 7 gets you 72.2Mbps real-world theoretical bandwidth. 40MHz of bandwidth gets you to 150Mbps with a single spatial stream.

Divide by two to get the theoretical upload and download speeds for full-duplex communications.

If your device can connect to and mix two spatial streams, this makes things a lot easier. 802.11n on most routers was a max of two spatial streams at MCS7 with 40Mhz of bandwidth (because it was cheaper), which is where we get 300Mbps as the max for that standard. Some routers will do 802.11n at 450Mbps with three spatial streams, but those are rare.

Two spatial streams means you can use one stream for download and one for upload. 150Mbps full duplex communications. Your AP-LR is capable of those speeds for WiFi clients talking to each other.

This gets more complicated when you get into the meat of the 802.11 standard where the modulation and coding of packets starts making a big difference, and where devices are power-limited and constrained by size, and can only send data at half the speed they receive it.

There's more. Early 803.2af devices like your old Ubiquiti AP could only connect at 100Mbps over Ethernet. It didn't matter how long the run was or if it was shielded CAT6a cable, you were limited to 100Mbps communications because of how the standard was designed. Gigabit PoE came considerably later.

So on the Ubiquiti AP, the most you'll ever get out of it is 100Mbps to the internet, and 150Mbps to other devices on the same AP.

Are you on a 200/100 package?
