I did a speed test on the IBurst website and I got 664kbp/s as my download speed. As an IBurst newbie, I would like to know how that compares against other users (so post yours). Also up for discussion is, is the speed test accurate and should we pay it any attention?

Thanks Native, I didn't see that. Man I am 300k below most other people. I gotta get the utTraceStar thing working. I mean 300k is 300k!

JA, UTTracestra and/or an antenna would serve you well. 300kb isnt the best. but for during the day it isnt ALL that bad if you dont have the best connection. Should speed up considerably after 6pm or so.

My download speed is 43kbps & upload is 156kbps - but I'm capped!

Do you think I should phone them and ask to swap my download & upload?

Just me that's lost again........... I downloaded a file last night (22:00) at about 40kbps. My testspeed result was approx. 300kbps. I heard some guys talking about connections of 500-600kbps  and they download at 50kbps. Is my download speed then quite high? utTraceStar rated my connection a 6/10...........tower is 11km away (strange, because there is one over the hill about 5km from my house, but not on the utTraceStar list  ).

btw: this is without an antenna. How will the antenna increase my connection and download speed??

Before antenna I was getting 300kbps and a rating of 5/10.
With antenna I get about 700 - 900 kbps and a rating of 8/10

It all very much depends on why your signal is bad now :).. My pc is in a room with no windows so my desktop modem was getting a terrible signal

If I put my antenna outside the house I am sure I can get a rating of 10/10 but I think it's ugly so mine is in the ceiling.

I have quite a big window, so I hope to get in the region of about 500-600 kbps. More will be great! :D I can't put mine in the ceiling, I have a corrugated-iron roof  But looking at the planned coverage........there should be a new tower in my area about 3km from my house.........but when I don't know... :(

Will it decrease my reception if I put it close to a satelite dish or television antenna?

where do you live ?

In West Park.........it's in the western parts of Pretoria......about 3km from Pretoria Show Grounds

Creed, my up & download speeds are the same, or sometimes better, than yours - that is, when I'm not capped!

I live in Irene, Centurion and get a 100% signal most of the time. Had my desktop modem on my desk, got 92% signal, put it in the window and signal went up to 100% - absolutely fantastic.

For some reason these modems like windows?

*Um, I just realised that my last sentence might start a flame war between Mac and PC owners - I meant REAL windows in a house, not microsoft windows on your pc.

Sat morning, capped

iburst site
My download speed is 10.4kbps
My upload speed is 55.0 kbps

signal (utracestar 70avg) = -95 (rated 5)

pinging iburst.co.za (-n 30) average 678ms
packet loss = 0% (wtf!)

mmm.....guess online gaming is out for me....

Tjorrie,

I've already asked that my 1GB account be upgraded to a 3GB account.

When I moved to Irene and got a 100% signal, there is just so much more to download!

Also, pcs nowadays are very much 'web dependant', which means most applications need to constantly update, e.g. Windows XP patches, Norton Internet Security,Creative Audigy driver update (at least 30MB), Nero (that's 40MB) game updates (Medal of Honor : Pacific Assault was a 134MB patch) - see where we are going?

Oh, and don't forget Windows XP service pack 3 will be available one of these days...300MB?

Hey Trixanno, Ive also seen my capped speeds get a bit worse latley. I had a international download where I had to run a constant ping to mybroadband.co.za just to keep it constant.

But I still game online fine, my pings are just as good. I actualyl got a ping of 38ms to myadsl.co.za!!! But that was just one while i was busy downloading.

Well im actually busy downloading the latest Opera 9 build now and it seems to be fine, between 7-10kb.

I finally got UTrace working. I average a 7/10 with -85. Thats with the Rosebank tower. When I am connected to Forrest Hill its -79 which aint too shabby. An outside antennae might help (I think).

I agree! When I moved out of Sunninghill I had so much less to download! :( :(

But my capped speed is stuck at 4KB/s max. Probably of my bad signal strength. My signal is now (sat afternoon) -91 (avg70) with rating of 6.

mmm...let me ping myadsl.co.za (-n 30 again)
Average = 899ms (ouch, it really hurts...)
packet loss = 10% (i knew the packet loss this morning was too good to be true)

You should try to make that windsurfer in the meantime. (i don't have the link, but i think it's in the utracestar thread). It helped my connection a lot. It helps the signal with +/- 3db (i think) and it focuses the signal to a tower...so you can then aim at forrest hill and probably get a signal of 76. that'll be good. (well, much better than mine, lol)
